Etherweed

Borrowed from Legend of Grimlock
Etherweed encompasses a number of delicate aquatic plant species that line riverbeds and brackish shorelines. It is known for its distinctive blue glow and as a highly addictive and regulated drug. Etherweed when drying, releases anesthetic vapors that immobilize and often incapacitate those exposed to it. While this catatonic state is euphoric, toxic exposure can happen if the etherweed vapors are not removed from the subject’s breathable area. Etherweed is notoriously utilized by covert agents to kidnap or commit acts of physical violence towards unsuspecting victims. Etherweed vapor is also highly flammable while desiccating and historically used to start campfires during early Ochita history. This earned its old nickname of ‘traveler’s luck’.

Anatomy

Etherweed is named for the fertile seeds suspended in its slimy residue and the vapors emitted when drying. The plant must be kept wet during storage to prevent toxic vapor build up and to preserve the plant’s potency. While being dried, the surfaces of the plant release an effervescent defense mechanism similar to diethyl ether. When re-exposed to water, the slimy coating reforms preventing further vaporization.

Toxicology

In toxic doses, Etherweed ether can cause respiratory depression and death. To frequent recreational users, etherweed dependence comes with a host of side effects. These include shortness of breath, saliva/mucous overproduction, nausea, seizures, muscular atrophy, loss of taste and smell, and therapeutic tolerance. While dilution in water is infrequent, infusions are possible under specific circumstances. Ingesting infused water provides a heightened euphoria but is easily fatal; water stored in the container can have different concentrations of infused vapors and drinking it or ‘tapping the tank’ is dangerous. Consumption of the plant is highly toxic and will result in destruction of the GI tract when a large enough amount is consumed.

Conservation Status
Due to its rampant abuse in Ochita, Etherweed is one of the only contraband drugs in Cabochon.
