Dire Islands

Built upon a chain of volcanoes in the frigid Marbled Sea, the Dire Islands comprises a massive complex of jails utilized by the elves for their many undesirables. Being ‘marbled’ entails the arduous, usually fatal journey to the frigid chain. Once island-bound, the prisoners are stripped and forced up the Biting Stairs, a sprawling snow-covered stairway leading to the volcano’s mouth. They are then flung into its high cone and must survive the interior. None are known to have escaped this hellish place but the rumors say enough: The journey upward is the easy part.
