Cambium

After rulership ends in the Elven Empire, it is expected that upon stepping down the former leader will don champagne robes trimmed in chartreuse. These exclusive colors denote a Cambia, the adopted title of a life-appointed member on the rulership's council. While the council is not exclusively made of Cambium, these individuals serve as elective and unrevokable advisers of the highest authority.
Named for the vital tissue that guides tree growth, Cambium members individually choose how they assist new leadership within the Empire if at all. A Cambia may serve as an emissary, governor, general, or even a community figurehead depending on their prerogative. While rare, former rulers have refused the role of Cambia or may contest incumbent rulers.
Despite these diverse and often distant roles, Cambium stay in communication with each other through arcane means. The distinct and venerated robes a Cambia adorn themselves may attune their thoughts to that of the whole.
