The Sable Company
The Sable Company, or Sable Company Mercenaries, of Korvosa is an elite, hippogriff-mounted company of marines. The commandant of the Company does not answer to the ruling monarch of the city-state, instead reporting directly to the Seneschal of Castle Korvosa. While the Korvosan Guard patrols the streets of the city, the Sable Company has jurisdiction over the skies and waters around Korvosa. The two organizations work closely together and the marines rely on their ties with the Guard to further coordinate efforts with the Hellknights and the Acadamae, both of whom are not on good terms with the Sable Company.
Structure
First by tradition, and later by an addendum to the city’s charter, the Sable Company does not answer to the leader of Korvosa, regardless of the leader’s title. Instead, the Commandant of the Sable Company reports directly to the Seneschal of Castle Korvosa who, as also decreed by charter amendment, cannot have less than three generations of separation between common ancestors with the city’s leader. With each new leader, the commandant pledges the company’s loyalty—usually within a few days, but in the past this has taken up to a year and, once, it did not happen at all.
The Sable Company adheres to a military chain of command closely mirroring that of The Korvosan Guard. Attaining any rank in the organization is predicated on succesfuly bonding with a hippogrypgh mount and graduating from the the Endrin Military Academy.
Culture
Sable Company marines are by and large fiercely loyal to the Sable Company and one another and act as aerial dragoons for the protection of the city.

The public agenda of the Sable Company is to protect the skies and waters around Korvosa.
Assets
The chief asset of the Sable Company is their well kept stable of hippogriff mounts. These creatures are trained from a young age to navigate the clustered rooftops of the busiest slums of the city and to protect their riders fiercely.
History
Waydon Endrin formed the Sable Company from the remnants of the marines who had served the old empire. Barely more than 100 hippogriffs survived the destruction of Quarren's aeries around the site of modern Quarren. Those surviving hippogriffs and their riders rallied behind Waydon Endrin in the hopes of establishing a new breeding ground and training center to preserve their traditions and the magnificent beasts they ride. After Field Marshal Korvosa commissioned him and gave him a command, Endrin worked to integrate his elite and well-trained marines with the dedicated but under-trained regular soldiers and common folk who formed the bulk of the army Korvosa managed to raise against the local Shoanti.
