Beastborn in Braythe: Shattered Realities | World Anvil

Beastborn

The Old Beasts. Creatures as large as countries or even entire worlds, roaming the Braythian Void freely. Some of them are the sole survivors of world-islands that have died, others serve as a home to entire cultures.   As varied as the worlds of Braythe, those born and living on such a beast often have a different mindset than what they call the "Chainbound" - inhabitants of worlds connected to the world-chains. Their entire existence is characterized by travel, by an everchanging surrounding, and more often than not, by encountering foreign cultures.   Some Old Beasts choose mortals that they telepathically communicate with, the so-called Confidants or Beast-Talkers. If a beast is benign to those living on it, they might actively seek out worlds where the Beastborn can trade or exchange information. To worlds that have never met an Old Beast before, like the young world of Ashandri, this is a pretty unique and defining experience. Of course, just because a beast is friendly to its inhabitants doesn't mean it is benign to everyone. And sometimes the appearance of an Old Beast spells doom for the inhabitants of a world.   The Living Worlds, as the supermassive creatures are also called, are extremely diverse. Some have the shapes of gigantic turtles or dragons, some are insectoid or even humanoid. Most of them carry their sun-equivalent with them, a giant crystal or other object floating above the Old Beast and providing the inhabitants with warmth and light. But a few have lost their sun. The Beastborn living on such an entity often know nothing but darkness, the only heat source being the creature's own body warmth.
