Voidborn in Braythe: Shattered Realities | World Anvil

Voidborn

Voidships, crafted from a unique glass, float through the purple clouds of the Braythian Void. They often have weird, alien shapes, and sizes vary between that of a small cutter and an entire city. These vehicles protect the people that live on them from the effects of the void. They usually come as flotillas, counting a dozen or so ships. A few travel alone, while the greatest fleets of the Voidborn count thousands of ships.   Those who live here have left their home worlds behind. Maybe their world-isle doesn't even exist anymore, or they (or their ancestors) had a reason to leave them forever. Whatever it is, the Voidborn consider their ships to be their homes. And most of them were actually born on a Voidship - they are literal Voidborns, children of the purple clouds.   While every flotilla of Voidborn has its own unique culture, many of them are united by a single philosophy: Forget the past, live for the moment. They don't care about ever touching solid ground again - their glass ships are solid enough. They don't envy what they call the Rockbiters or Groundbound, people living on one of the world-islands, and instead prefer their life of freedom.   The smaller communities often have trouble gathering the basic resources for survival. With not enough space to grow plants or even keep livestock, they rely on trade with other Voidborn, or with the worlds they come across. Of course, some Voidborn prefer not to pay (or lack the resources), and become Void Pirates.   The Perishing are known to hunt the Voidborn, seemingly having a particular hatred for them. The fleets usually have their means of escaping, if only by the speed of their ships. But occasionally, the remnants of a destroyed flotilla can be found in the void, slowly dissolving.   Some Voidborn communities are on a quest, hunting for a specific artifact or simply for something that will make their survival easier in the future. And in very rare cases, Voidborn communities have what they call a Prophet: Individuals with purple eyes, not unlike the world champions, except that they were born with these eyes. They seem to have a special connection to the Braythian Void, and those who follow them often see their missions as some sort of holy quest. Most often, the prophets seek to protect something, but there are tales of Voidborn communities hunting for individual Perishing.   The material that the Voidships are crafted from is extremely light. An entire ship with a crew of fifty people weighs only a few dozen pounds. At the same time, the glass is nearly unbreakable - even Voidships ramming each other or crashing on a world-island often suffer no damage at all. The translucent material is often, at least partially, covered from the inside with other components, from wood or metal to simple fabrics.   There are Voidships created from other material, but they usually belong to explorers from a world-isle. The Voidborn usually keep the secrets of their ships to themselves. Even most of the crew members of a Voidborn ship don't know exactly what their vehicles are made from, or how they were built in the first place.
