Korr

Lord of the Mountain

The Mountain Father best helps his children by letting them help themselves. Through their success they honor Korr, through their failures they learn to improve or die. The cold winter wind, the hot midday sun, the wild beast terrorizing the farmer, the adder in the riverbank, all these obstacles are Korr's doing. Any who succumb to them were too weak to live as interpreted by Korr's unyielding ideology. His challenges make the mortals who overcome them stronger for surviving. Those who bend, but do not break are his paragons.

Tenets of Faith

He is the foremost deity worshiped by the goliath, though dwarves and humans also include him in their nameday celebrations as well as funeral rites. Krom's followers worship him through feats of strength and accomplishment. It is said that he prefers accomplishments made by individuals, however great deeds of all kinds are celebrated in his name. Though to a lesser extent, accomplices and companions are generally acknowledged in the event a truly legendary endeavor is completed.

Holidays

Kromstride: It is believed that this is the day where Krom visits the Prime and takes a tally of the achievements his followers have accomplished in the last year. It is customary to ask for nothing, but display trophies and proof of one's achievements. After evaluating the offerings, he may bless his worshipers with good luck or other boons at his discretion. This celebration is held on the First of Ventus (Gale). On this day offerings of salt, minerals, treasures, or alcohol are left at his shrines. A week-long feast is held in Úrkoma commencing on this day. Typically, the festival is an opportunity for boasting young goliaths to prove their worth.

Intellectual Characteristics

A cold pragmatism underlines the majority of Korr's decisions. In most matters, including those involving mortals, he is measured and exacting. On certain occasions where his patience is tested, his fury rushes forth like a terrible deluge. Overbearing, oppressive, and complete, those on the receiving end of his wrath either find death or worse punishment in store for them.

Morality & Philosophy

"Contemplate the mountain. It withstands the wind, rain, and the snow year by year. It tolerates the creatures that make their home in its caves, valleys, and peaks. However, no mountain is eternal. When the mountain has had enough it shakes the snows loose, sends down floods to the plains, and buries life under the rubble as rocks and boulders fall from its great heights. It sweeps away everything from its tired shoulders to start anew. The mountain remains, but it is the lesser - and so are you." - Contemplation of the Mountain, allegedly written by Korr himself.   The main tenets of Korr are threefold: stoicism, personal growth, and overcoming adversity. His teachings still leave room for celebrations, but he is yet regarded as the most severe and dour of the non-antagonistic gods of the realms. He does not care for decorum or gilded words, favoring instead the actions that spur men and women to the next day. Bearing burdens foments endurance. Striving to improve one's craft or prowess demonstrates further discipline, and achieving your goals in the face of opposition cements his favor - for a time. As with the mountain, nothing is eternal and the work never truly finishes.

Taboos

Asking Korr for assistance is the most egregious offense one could possibly make. It is considered sacrilegious in the overwhelming majority of cases. Instead, his name is usually issued as a curse.

Personality Characteristics

Motivation

Krom wants for nothing, but he oversees the mortals of the world in their struggle for survival. One might assume that he leaves the bulk of the civilized folk in their cities to other gods - that those who concern him live in the wild, rough places. Perhaps there is some truth to this, but the farmer toiling away at his fields owes the Mountain Father just as much as a green hunter seeking to make his name in the world. The farmer does not ask Krom for a good harvest, rather thanks him for the strength necessary to complete his work. Most often, Krom's name is invoked as a curse or expletive (Krom take you to his mountain!) and is not appealed to through prayers. More often than not, he greatly disapproves of those who pray to him for aid, as the very will to live is his gift to mortals. Anything more than this bare minimum is a luxury and must be earned.
