Fairies

Fairies are one of the sapient species that inhabit Borgalor, native to the subtropical Teleyk Islands southwest of the continent of Jælondis. Their civilizations are traditionally based around apiculture and orchardry, and were the first ones encountered by human and elven explorers from Jælondis, before which they had been isolated from the rest of the world.
Today, fairy communities are found all over Borgalor, though the vast majority of their population is still centered on their native archipelago, where they are known for producing several kinds of high-quality honey1, mead and candles, and rare alchemical ingredients and potions made from endemic plants and animals. In turn, the natives buy metals and other materials which they either lack on the archipelago or would be too difficult for them to collect or manufacture themselves.

Appearance and abilities

Fairies are small lepidopterous people, with large composite eyes, long antennae, four arms and two legs, slender body and two pairs of large, membranous wings. Their bodies are entirely black and white -aside from the iridescent eyes- and feature minimal sexual dimorphism, individual fairies can be recognized by their markings, antennae and voice, the latter which has a distinct metallic sound to it.
Like their wild cousins, fairies lay eggs and their children spend their early existence as caterpillars before entering metamorphosis, and are not considered actual persons until after they emerge from their chrysalis.

Arcane abilities

While a single fairy's spells are far weaker than those of other borgaloreans, they absorb magic so quickly that they can wear any opponent down with a constant barrage of spells without any need to recover their arcane reserves and are only limited by hunger and fatigue. Those who have faced the wrath of a swarm of fairies often liken it to being caught in a tempest of arcane energy, which is the main reason the Teleyk Islands have never been colonized by outsiders.
Another notable ability is that fairies can sense magic by hearing it via their tympanal organs, similarly to how Ophids can see magical energies, and thus their mages refer to magic as The Hum.

Currently, the most powerful country ruled by fairies is Úvate on the southern Teleyk Islands.

Culture and Cultural Heritage

Architecture

Traditional fairy settlements are centered around birch groves which support the buildings, surrounded by fruit trees, berry bushes and beehives, with flowers of all sorts covering the ground beneath them. Buildings are made from lightweight materials such as bark, woven plant-fibers (including coir) and sticks, fastened with beeswax and string.

1Hex, one of the most popular fizzy brand in Borgalor, contains a particular kind of honey which only Hex Co. has the rights to buy from the Teleyk Islands.
