Fringe folk

A harsh Land

Life in The Fringe lands is hard, but for some it is far preferable to the city. At least out here they can live their lives as they choose, everyone is on the same playingfield, and there is a certain brutal honesty about it all. It is a place that demands you survive it, but if you can then it isn't as bad a home as it first appears.

A Community on the move

The Fringe Folk are a semi nomadic people, having several camping grounds that they move between, and on occaision will set up new camps if a suitable water source is found. They own only what they can carry when they have to move, as such they have few personal possessions other than those required for living and survival. When they move they take the entire settlement with them.

The water trail

Water in the fringe Lands is relatively scarce, and most of it is underground. The limited rainfall the area sees is absorbed quickly by the dry, rocky soil. The Fringe Folk have built a system of wells over the years, however they are limited and refill slowly. When a well begins to run dry, runners are sent out to the nearest well locations to see which one is fullest. Once this has been determined they pack up and move on. The settlement can be ready to move in about a day, though the people themselves can be ready to move in a matter of minutes, if they have to leave everything behind in an emergency.

Mobile Gardens

Since they very rarely stay still for more than a year, permanent crop farming isn't much of an option. Being masters of life on the move however, they have solved this problem with mobile kitchen gardens. These are basically wagons filled with fertilized soil that they can pull with (horses). The wheels and axles have been modified to afford some suspension, due to the rough and uneven terrain of the Fringe Lands. This way the Fringe Folk can carry food with them wherever they go.
