The Fringe lands

Geography

The Fringe lands stretch from the Rift hills in the east to the Great Rift in the west. To the north they meet the [placeholder] mountain range which curves down to meet the hills, to the south they eventually fade into the jungle lands of the Elves. It is a harsh land of rocky soil, rolling ridges, and sparse rainfall. Arable land is hard to come by, and surface water sources are rare. There is also an almost constant wind which blows across the almost barren landscape, originating from the rift.

Ecosystem

Most things that live in the fringelands are constantly fighting for survival, as for being such an inhospitable place, there are a variety of creatures, folks and plants that call this region home. During the summer the temperatures soar, and in the flat landscape shade is hard to come by. Many creatures choose to move towards the foothills during the height of summer, and again during the depths of winter. Although snow is rare, freezing temperatures, biting winds, and ground frost make life just as difficult. Spring and autumn tend to have more balanced temperatures and this is when the fringelands are at their most active.

Fauna & Flora

Plants which grow here are those capable of surviving with limited water, and in low nutrient rocky soil. In the shelter of the ridges some larger plants, usually brush and shrubs, will grow. While in the more exposed areas there tends to be hardy grasses and scrub.

Natural Resources

There is very little of worth out here in the fringelands, although for those brave enough to venture closer to the Rift, there can be found deposits of precious minerals and semi-precious stones. The area also sees a higher concentration of meteorites than in some of the other surrounding regions. This does encourage meteorite hunters into the region.

Tourism

Very few vistors come out to the fringelands, not only is there very little out there of worth, there are also a variety of things which are quite capable and even more willing to kill you, some of those things walk on two legs. Those who do venture out here are usually either merchants or fools, or both.
