Department of Public Health and Sanitation

Clean living

Those who run Salike like their city to be clean and demonstrative of their wealth. As such Citizens are required to ensure their homes and businesses are well maintained and presented. There are laws concerning fly-tipping, pollution and waste and these laws are enforced with fines or, in extreme cases, prison time. Since the discovery of the Daemon Tech and other sources of cleaner energy, coal power has been all but banished in industrial use. Those in power believe smog is unslightly and have gone to great lengths to try and eradicate it from the city.   The environmental and pollution laws are overseen and enforced by the Department of Public Health and Sanitation. It is their reposnsibility to; ensure that the public is kept updated on any changes to the laws, handle queries and complaints, and enforce the current laws. They may issue fines and community service but any infraction that requirers a sterner punishment must be handled by a magistrate. They are the third largest Department in Salike, and their headquarters are situated in a grand building in Parliament Square.

Smog Patrol

This is the name the enforcing arm of the DPHS has been given by the public. These are the people who ensure that citizens and businesses are complying with the environmental regulations. Their role is two-fold and is carried out in pairs consisting of an Enforcer and an Inspector. The pairs are sent out to inspect premises and investigate complaints, and issue any fines for non-compliances found. They are also sent out to collect on any non-payment of fines and serve summons before the Magistrate.
Enforcer
These are the muscle of the DPHS's enforcement teams. Trained in defense and non lethal combat, it is their responsibility to protect the Inspector as they carry out their duties. They carry an assortment of gear designed to subdue rather than kill or maim, these include; clubs, saps, bolas, nets, darts tipped with nerve toxins and syringes of tranquilisers. Usually just the presence of the Enforcer is enough to ensure most people don't become violent, but in the poorer areas of the commons street thugs and other criminal elements do exist.
Inspector
Their role is to carry out the inspections of properties, give warnings, and write up the fines. They must be up to date on all current regulations and receive monthly training to this effect. Training in conflict resolution and rudimentary psychology is also a requirement. They are the public face of the DPHS and must maintain an air of professionalism at all times so Inspectors are vetted and chosen carefully. They also receive some self defense training and are equipped with tranquilisers but they carry no weapons while carrying out their duties.
