The founding of Salike
Salike had originally been a Human city called Dyopat. During The Great Quake almost two thirds of the population had been wiped out, and the survivors were left with a half destroyed city. A few weeks later survivors from the city of Nysada to the north arrived, these were mostly Gnomes and they brought their religion with them. Over the course of the next few months more and more refugees from amongst the northern Gnomes and southern Elves came to the city. They each brought with them thier own religions and cultures.
At first everyone was too concerned with surviving and rebuilding for these differences to pose much of a problem. However, as things began to settle down and people turned their thoughts to less immediate concerns the cultural gaps became apparent. Each had different ideas on how to govern, which Gods to worship, social contracts, and any number of other ways of life. The humans felt they had the right to chooses as Dyopat was technically still their city, however the new arrivals felt they should have a say as they now made up at least half of the populatiion.
As tensions grew and fights began to break out, several of the leaders of the various communities got together to try and resolve these differences. After months of talks the leaders finally came up with a constitution of sorts which laid out the basic rights of the citizens of Dyopat. It was also decided during these negotiations to rename the city to represent the new multicultural nature of it's peoples, the name of Salike was settled upon.
The document that was produced from these talks set out: how the city was to be governed, religious freedoms, the rights of it's citizens, and the terms which declared a person a citizen of Salike. The leaders who had been present at the discussions all signed the document as representatives of their people.
