Icarex

King Taila

Icarex was a king of Tailaphon. He led a valiant defense against the Yuan-Ti invaders and turned the tide of that struggle, preventing them from ever conquering Tailaphon.
He then began a 5 year reign of terror that led to an uprising in which Icarex and his close circle were all either killed or exiled by the rebels.

In the wake of Icarex's overthrow, Tailaphon established a democracy that exists until this day.

Education

Icarex was trained in martial arts, battle strategy, politics, economics, administration, and some magic from a young age by the court tutors in Tailaphon.

Employment

Icarex grew up as the prince heir to the throne of Tailaphon. His father, Icarindion was assassinated when Icarex was still a young man and some accused Icarex of orchestrating the plot.

Accomplishments & Achievements

Icarex led a defense against the Yuan-Ti, who had begun an invasion of Tailaphon years earlier and were slowly winning the war. Icarex and his advisors' brilliant strategy and clever use of magic allowed them to push back both the Yuan-Ti and the massing monsters of Forsook. While the struggle against the Forsook monsters continues to this day, Icarex and his advisors turned the tide of the war against the Yuan-Ti, preventing them from ever conquering Tailaphon and therefore maintaining uninterrupted freedom and human rule for the citizens living there.

Failures & Embarrassments

Once Icarex had been made king and turned the tide against the Yuan-Ti invaders, he looked towards strengthening his position both against external threats and internal ones. Many threats were real, but others were born out of sheer paranoia. Icarex became a cruel tyrant, inflicting pain and suffering on more and more of his people. He demanded the walls of Tailaphon be doubled in size, and achieved this goal in just a few short years mostly through forced labor. Thousands are said to have died during the construction, though the walls still stand today.
Eventually, he alienated enough of his people that a rebellion erupted, widely supported by almost all strata of society: the peasants, the nobility, and the military. An armed mob broke into the palace and hunted down Icarex's close circle of advisors, killing most of them in their search for Icarex himself. Searching back and forth through the palace, they finally found Icarex leaning over the body of one his murdered advisors. He tried to run, but was stabbed over a dozen times before jumping off a balcony into the water below. His body was never found.

Intellectual Characteristics

Icarex had a brilliant mind for strategy. He felt most comfortable devising ways to win unwindable tactical situations. Like a fire looking for more fodder to burn, though, when there ceased to be real threats, Icarex began to invent new ones, employing all his genius to imagine plots against him.

Morality & Philosophy

Even in his younger years, before paranoia took over, Icarex firmly believed that the ends justify the means. And that a man could not tout his morality in the belly of a monster. He was a genius who wanted to protect his people from the very real outside threats, but he had little interest in approaches that were not his own and eventually came to view any detractors as threats to the safety of Tailaphon.
