Gorgons

"It's kind of sad, really," Rebekah said snidely. "You all keep talking about how you're not afraid of any monsters--" She pulled her sunglasses down and peered over the rim--"But you don't even have the guts to look me in the eye."
The descendants of the sisters of Medusa. Gorgons have secretly coexisted with humans for centuries. They possess incredible psychic powers that they manifest through their snakelike eyes. These powers have been useful in the drive to stay hidden in plain sight, but after recent events, it might not be long before no amount of power can keep the gorgon race safe.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Gorgon anatomy and physiology is mostly identical to those of normal humans, but there are several differences that set them apart. The most prominent feature of a gorgon is their eyes. All gorgons possess eyes with black sclera, brightly colored irises, and slit pupils. Older gorgons can camouflage their eyes as normal human eyes, but younger gorgons lack this ability and must rely on other ways to hide their true nature. In addition, gorgons age at a slower rate than humans and have significantly longer life spans. Gorgons also have lower body temperatures than humans, and they are more easily affected by hot and cold weather. One minor difference between gorgons and humans is tongue length. The average human tongue is about 3.2 inches long, while the average gorgon tongue is about 4.1 inches long.

Biological Traits

In addition to all the biological variations displayed in humans, gorgons tend to perceive whatever color their irises are more clearly than other colors.

Genetics and Reproduction

Gorgons reproduce just like humans, though gorgons give birth to females at a higher rate than they do males. While gorgons are capable of having children with humans, doing so will have a 50/50 chance of producing either a human or a gorgon child, indicating a potential genetic component to a gorgon's abilities.

Additional Information

Geographic Origin and Distribution

Gorgons live in small, close-knit communities around the world.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

All gorgons have some sort of psionic ability that can only manifest through their eyes. These abilities first appear when a gorgon is about six, and what kind of ability they develop is almost impossible to predict. A gorgon will lose these powers if it is blinded or otherwise loses its eyes. Gorgons also possess enhanced eyesight and night vision.

Interspecies Relations and Assumptions

Gorgons' relationships with humans are tentative at best. Some try to avoid humans altogether, others only interact with them out of necessity, and others still will go out of their way to befriend and coexist with them. Overall, however, gorgons as a society tend to shy away from humans, and with good reason. Who knows how humans might react if their existence was discovered?
