Drakes & Mines

General Summary

May 29-30, year 1; Perrin , Sam the Iridiumite, Ladybird, and Wagner Wulfson   The party meet in the pub, and get asked by Raz’m Khar to help rescue a farmer taken by a river drake.   Thanks to Ladybird’s invisibility spell and Sam’s tremorsense, the group gets a drop on the drakes in their nest. Perrin proves his tales of victory by nearly single-handedly killing the smaller drake. After a short fight, Sam drops the second one, and the group returns to town victorious.   The find a snazzy set of bracers and a mysterious key. Wags offers the bracers to Perrin for a job well done, and as a token for future adventures. They bring Dezy out to check out the key, and she has a vision: she sees a ruined Norse city to the South, a pilar with the name Jernevar, and a door waiting beneath a pile of rubble.   They stay the night in town, intending to go explore Jernevar in the morning.   The party heads out in the morning to Jernevar. On their way, Wags & Ladybird spot a standing stone on a hill, and in the air they spot a valley with a strange group of humanoids. The people (?) spot the two in the air, and fill the valley with mist.   Arriving in Jernevar, the group sees skeletal footprints. As birds, Perrin spots a small hooded figure darting around the south side of the city. They land, and begin stealthing up to it.   Ladybird and Perrin go in and “talk” to the goblin inside his hovel. After some miming, and giving him some food, they leave, not very much the wiser, and begin to inspect the city.   They follow a set of skeletal tracks to a house, and wake a skeletal worker, who - not seeing them under their invisibility spell - grumbles in Old Norse and goes back to sleep within its “grave.” They follow the tracks to where they converge at the entrance to a mine in the hills, following them in and killing a group of skeletons/workers and their undead foreman. The ledger the foreman was keeping describes changes happening to the town and the mine, some kind of “Bane” or wasting sickness killing off a lot of the townsfolk and mineworkers. Near the end, those that were healthy enough to travel were called to a place called Kaldaven.   The miners, now undead, had begun digging again about 11 years ago. They were looking for some kind of treasure behind a strange, word-covered archway.   Using tremorsense, Sam picks out an odd pocket 50+ft into the stone. Sam & Ladybird begin digging in that direction.   They open into a 30’ diameter hemispherical room. In the center was an upside-down vortex of shadow, contained within a binding circle. The circle was anchored by three small bronze plaques, arranged in a triangle around it, and radiated a strong aura of protection magic. The three plaques had “Wind Whisper,” “Stone Speak,” and “Shadow Bind” inscribed on them in Old Norse.   The group decides to leave well enough alone, and close the tunnel up. They wait for the next group (shift?) of miners to arrive, and murder them all, despite Ladybird giving them away. An easily-won fight ensues, and they close up the mine. They decide to head back home and talk to Dezy about the things they found. Also maybe get Dezy out here to talk to the goblin and find out what he’s doing there.
