Making Runic Items in Beyond Ragnarok | World Anvil

Making Runic Items

Typically, magic was the remit of the Aesir and Vanir Gods only, whose innate attunement to the Runes allowed them to perform magic in many forms. Mere mortals, having no understanding of the true nature of magic and the cosmos, could historically almost never hope to perform magic.

However, with the discovery of the Natural Crystal and Shards by the Folkvargrof Midgard, mortal beings learnt how to make and release power via magically charged Runes. These Runes can also be input into item such as weapons and armour, infusing the item with a specific magical skill, or the resistance to one, which can then be called upon when using an appropriate level Runic Charge.

In all magical avenues of smithing, the Runes you use matter. The Folkvargr have long known what works, and have provided the new smiths of the realms with a table showing the appropriate Runes for skills.

Requirements

You will need both mundane resources, and Runes is order to make Runic Items.

You can find the mundane costs of all items here: Mundane Resources for Crafted items

The Runes required will depend on the skill you are making the item for. You need three Runes in total, one of which must be the 'Focus' Rune for that skill.

Item Examples
Example 1:

Player A uses 3 Hematite Runes, plus the mundane resources of 1 Steel, 4 Treated Wood and 1 Leather, to produce a Crush Axe.

One Hematite rune is the appropriate rune symbol for Crush. Two Hematite runes are of any symbol.

Player B, who has the Thane profession with all three Basic skills, and the advanced skill Strikedown can now also perform Crush by using a charge when they crack a Hematite rune. Player B could choose to call three Crushes; two Crushes and a Strikedown; or one Crush and two Strikedowns.

Example 2:

Player A uses 3 Hematite Runes, plus the mundane resources of 6 Treated Wood and 3 Steel, to produce a resist to Crush large sized Shield.

One Hematite rune is the appropriate rune symbol for Crush. Two Hematite runes are of any symbol.

Player B, who has the Shield skill can add ‘resist Crush’ to their available skills when they crack a Hematite rune.

Roleplay

What your character is doing whilst crafting a Runic Items is creating something with the energy of the skill you have chosen (the focus Rune) by using the power of the other two runes as the ‘glue’ that holds the whole item together, to either:

You will need to spend the majority of the hour you are crafting the item at a forge of some desctiption, either in your camp, or in the Folkvargr long hall.

When we say 'majority' of the time, you are not expected to contentrate solely on your forge to the detriment of conversation and roleplay. Speak to others whilst you are working. Take a quick break for a drink, or something to eat, etc. As long as your main focus of that hour is your work at the forge, that is what we are after.
