Loomstone

Properties

Material Characteristics

Loomstone is known to grow in small crystal formations up to 15cm in size. The largest recorded singular piece was measured at 43cm and valued at over 10,000pt. It is more common to find Loomstone in singular 1cm cubes in deep volcanic areas or regions infused with primal energy.    It has a dense texture that is smooth even before it is refined. It is considerably dense, similar to lead, yet it floats in water.   Once refined it becomes a supple, malliable material similar to clay or tallow. If streched it will eventually reform into a blob.

Physical & Chemical Properties

Loomstone is incredibly valuable within alchemical circles and mage guilds due to its umatched magical potential. It can be used to replace any material component in spells at a 10:1 value. It can also be fused and bonded to items to enhance enchantments or allow multipul enchantments to be bound to a single item.    Legends say that some mages even infuse the item into their bodies to increase their own magical abilites.

Origin & Source

Loomstone was discovered by miners deep under Yillan Ridge. Since its intial discovery every miner dreams of finding even a pinch. Notable sources of Loomstone exist in The Cloudtops, Mount Varaam & Yillan Ridge.

Life & Expiration

Loomstone's magical potential can be disrupted by improper refinement, causing a deadly explosion of arcane power. If the natural crystal is exposed to Radient magic, it becomes inert and useless, losing it's colour and emitting a vile stench of decaying flesh.

History & Usage

History

When Loomstone was discovered under Yillan Ridge the town of Qwesaar had an economic explosion and rose significantly in political power. The small trading town grew to the second largest city in Beru in the span of 10 years as hundreds of traders and miners flooded in to exploit this new resource.    As time went by the trade of Loomstone became heavily monopolised by the city's elite until other deposits were discovered. Today it stands as the second most restricted item in Beru after Witchwood and fetches the highest price for any material in Beru.    Rumours persist that powerful mages infuse their bodies with Loomstone to boost their own magical abilites, with deadly results.

Discovery

Loomstone was first discovered in mines deep under Yillan Ridge by miners from Qwesaar. Since then, deposits are have been found in The Cloudtops & Mount Varaam  The Mirage Alliance claims to have known and used Loomstone for centuries before it was discovered in Qwesaar.

Refinement

The porcess used to refine Loomstone into its purer form is a closely guarded secret. Only three known refineries exist with two located in Qwesaar and one in Mistvale. The people of the Mirage Alliance have a seperate way to refine the stone, though no-one knows how.    It is known that should the refinement process be done incorrectly, the resulting explosion of arcane energy can level an area of several hundred feet. The area will then become infused with raw magic for several months, and if the explosion is large enough the effect will become permanent.

Manufacturing & Products

Loomstone has two known forms: Pure Loomstone, a solid, oderless isometric crystal of iridecent shine and Refined Loomstone, a supple putty-like substance of luminecent pink

Hazards

If Pure Loomstone is refined incorrectly it will explode with deadly magical force. It is also known to be extremly toxic if ingested by any organic life. It appears to also corrode all known metals with the exception of Electrum.

Distribution

Storage

Loomstone in both its forms must be stored in electrum lined boxes once removed. If it is exposed to Radient magic it loses its magical properties and becomes inert, losing its colour and emitting a decaying flesh stench.

Law & Regulation

The sale of Loomstone, both pure and refined, is heavily regulated and monitered by any faction that has access to the stone.
