Khenifra
Khenifra is one of two settlements that sit on the edge of the Vasugan Marshes in the south of Beru. Sitting on the marshes eastern edge, tucked against the Bay of Serpents Khenifra is uniquely trapped between two sources of water that ebb and flow as the seasons pass. This has led the residents to develope a unique style of home which rise and fall with the tides and floods.
Life here is slow and calm, many of the residents have come from far away lands to seek the quiet, simple life. You can often see people sitting on outside their homes with a fishing pole to pass the warm afternoon by. There is little to no crime here as everyone knows everyone, and visitors are welcomed with open arms, often leaving with more than they arrived with due to the generous nature of Khenifra's people.
Demographics
Most of the residents here are those who find peace within nature. Within the roughly 500 people that live here you will find an abundance of Elves, Gnomes, and Halflings, though there is a significant population of Humans & Half-Elves. It is rare to see Dwarves or Orcs living here but it not unheard of.
Government
There is no formal government within Khenifra, though there are select individuals who hold influence within the village for certain matters such as healing, hunting or trade.
Defences
Khenifra has no formal defences as the village is ignored by bandits due to its proximity to the Vasugan Marshes, though the hunters within will defend their homes from beasts that wonder too close.
Industry & Trade
Relying on simple bartering the Khenifran's see little value in coin, though it can be used here. Most often the villagers will trade basic supplies for more exotic items brought by travellers.
Infrastructure
When the village is flooded people use simple canoes to travers the murky waters, and when the tide drops they wade through the muddy silt.
History
The current location of Khenifra is not its original, to the north lay the ruins of a more perminant settlement created by the Phirean Dynasty in 913 as an effort to secure more land for the newly formed country. This settlement was backed by several nobel families within the Dynasty due to the areas rich resources, but in 1001 the town was raized by a powerful Black Dragon who would become known as @Sirimid; The Lord of Rot.
After the dragon attack the survivors fled south to rebuild their lives away from the influence of the Phirean Dynasty informally declaring the new village as a free settlement.
Points of interest
There are no main sights to see here other than the village itself, though some hunters from Pitax will stop here before moving into the marshes to track the wild beasts that dwell within.
Architecture
The homes and buildings here are made of the local trees that grow on the edges of the marshlands, giving a druidic aesthetic to the village with long trails of swamp moss clinging to the roofs and walls. The homes are all built atop wooden rafts that rise with the seasonal floods and tides.
Geography
The area is considered a marshland that reaches the coastline at points. Mangroves pertrude into the sea and cottonwoods jut from the murky waters. The land is predominitly flat with small patches of dryer land rising from the waters. As the tides rise and fall the area becomes submurged in seawater.
Natural Resources
The marshes provide plenty of game, fish and birds for hunting. Rare herbs can be found here too. Wreckage from ships sunk in the Bay of Serpents sometimes finds its way to the village on the tides.
