Jezen Veskev
She was wearing a man’s shirt, the topmost buttons undone and a silver locket resting against her breastbone beneath. Her trousers were men’s trousers as well, the suspenders hanging loose on her hips. And plain white socks; she wore no shoes. Ast could respect that. White hair pulled back in a messy tail, nearly half of it loosely framing her face.
None of this pegged her as a formidable blood arcanist. What made her distinct was the band of white cloth around her eyes, tied tight underneath the tail and sporting two black, inky stains where her sockets would be underneath. And then the ink that covered her own body, from her smooth cheekbones to underneath her sleeves and collar. She was a piece of art herself, and Ast stared unabashedly at the lines of runes, the curling patterns spreading from underneath her collar and shirtsleeves. He couldn’t remember having ever seen a Common woman with tattoos.
Jezen is presumed to be a blood arcanist, though she is the only one of her specialty—bloodinking. She runs a small inkshop in
South Beourjen, but her real occupation is as a tattoo artist, using blood in her inks to create permanent spells or runes. Although it's not explicitely stated, Jezen is also the mother of
Misha Veskev and possibly the reason why Misha originally returned to Beourjen City.
Bloodbonds
Jezen inked both the bloodbond between
Astervitch and
Evander as well as Astervitch and
Ryven. She presumably also inked the one between
Jamie and his mother,
Alma Corrigan. The bond, which can only be done by a bloodinker, enables the parties to know some degree of well-being of the other in that they can feel significant changes in heartbeat or rhythm through the pressure of the tattoo. When one of the individuals dies the tattoo scars over, as is mentioned of Alma's bond after Corrigan dies.
Appearance
Jezen is extremely pale with completely white hair, indicating early to middle stage arcanic poisoning. She wears a strip of cloth over her eyes and is rumoured to have lost her eyes in her youth, or to have plucked them out herself in order to become a more adept arcanist. Several of her back teeth are missing as well, and most of her body except for her face is covered in bloodink. Many of the tattoos are runic writing in either
Cravven or
Aveaan.
