Grand Praetor Rank/Title in Belthuran | World Anvil

Grand Praetor

The Praetors are the priests of the Justiciar who have taken the call to become a judge of the wilds. It is the Preator's job to go into the world and find the villages that need the service of a judge. Many places are too small or remote to have their own ordained judge. They are to bring not only the law to these places but justice. They often have to dispel whatever local customs about law and justice have set in from the village elders to do this. Having the powers of a god go a long way to helping this transition but it is rarely a smooth transition.   A Grand Praetor is one of these judges who has a higher authority than a normal Praetor. A Grand Praetor oversees an area such as a province and the Praetors within it. It is their job to ensure there are enough Praetors to bring the word of The Justiciar to the people. They also review the cases that a Preator has overseen and if they find fault with the decision can call the Preator to face judgment of their own.

Qualifications

To become a Grand Praetor an applicant must be a Praetor within the faith of the Justiciar. They must have worked many cases without a flawed judgment. A flawed judgment will reset the number of cases as they need to learn more. From there, a Grand Praetor will have to nominate the applicant. After nomination, their career is reviewed by other Grand Praetors in a kingdom. If the applicant receives a majority approval their nomination is then passed to the kingdom's Exalted Praetor. It is the Exalted Praetor who manages all the Preators of a kingdom who makes the final decision.

Cultural Significance

When one of the Preators arrives at a village it means a priest of the god of justice is there to seek out wrongdoings. It means they will bring justice to the offenders and the victims. Most view the arrival of a Praetor as a good thing, but those who have done wrong will get anxious in their presence. Should a Grand Praetor arrive it is rarely alone. A Grand Praetor will have a retinue of priests, Praetors, and deputized agents. It means that there is a deep wrong in the area that needs to be sought and brought to justice.
