Enchanting Methods

There is a particular method required for the creation of enchanted items, to some, it is a deep process that requires an item to be shaped by the will and skill of its user, to others it is a means to an end, and others it is just a thing that helps them survive. The three most distinct methods of creating an item fall into one of three categories; Draconic (this also includes Draconic Artifice, explained further in), Dwarven, and Traditional. Each of these has a style of formula unique to its own that must be known to properly enchant an item. The needed components are a Formula, a core, and a body; after that, anything else is additional and may help in the construction or empowerment at a DM's discretion.

Draconic

Arcane Heart   'Arcane hearts' the literal translation of the gem used by the Draz Tyran in their enchanting they are a rare and very respected core. These cores are grown in places of extreme arcane levels of varying size and strength. These arcane gardens are a very delicate environment with arcane elementals wandering around them. They are immune to wild magic and null magic. Long term exposure is considered hazardous as organic matter tends to either crystalize eventually petrifying the creature it is attached too, there have also been reports of spontaneous explosions. The leader of the elementals, sometimes a dragon other times an elder elemental determines a price for the exchange for one of these cores, they are rarely interested in coin.   These places are rare but also excellent enchanting spots. Lesser gems can handle projects up to 3rd level, average ones can handle up to 6th level, and the rarest, usually grown by the leader themselves can handle the larger projects up to 9th level. Much like the environment, they are from they are delicate and can become broken easily, a broken one can't be repaired to functionality, even with wish or miracle spells. Finding these outsides of these gardens is rare and are very expensive. They recharge enchantments naturally and hold enchantments very easily.

Dwarven

Runecraft Core   Runecraft cores are a middle ground in price, they are expensive but robust and do recharge passively over time. They are made of metal alloys with pure silver rods and inlays. These do not work well with items not designed for Rune Formula. If used on a formula for another method, it will either not function or explode. These are harder to get than batteries for non-dwarves but not impossible.   Like arcane batteries these cores scale in price and spell circle they can handle with each having its own cost with a large increase in price past 6th level as they become very difficult to make.

Traditional

Arcane Battery   The cheapest of the core options for magic item construction is generally used in the construction of wands within Escini. These batteries have a fixed charge amount that does not recharge passively. They can be recharged but only by giving the battery more power in the form of the spell the wand was designed to cast. A benefit of this style is they have more upfront power and can last longer in a single day, however over time they become less effective without dedicated recharging. (Items marked with 'AB' are battery versions of the item. The number of charges equals [Either 25 or 1d20+30 depending on DM choice]) Arcane batteries are easy to come by, more so in Escini and scale with spell circle & price with a noteworthy increase in form and cost at higher circles.

A note on 5th edition D&D

If you use a wand with an Arcane battery it can only discharge so much energy at once safely, the spell circle of the battery determines the level of the spell you can cast in one shot. For example, a 5th level arcane battery could produce a 5th level magic missile, attempting to do more causes the wand to explode dealing the damage of the spell that was trying to be cast to the user, or if it was an area spell such as fireball target the user.

What are the recharge rates for Draconic and Dwarven cores?

Dec 26, 2020 22:05

Depending on the quality of the heart or core. Lesser is 1D4, Average is 1D4+1, Greater is 1D6+1. Legendary quality ones simply restore themselves to full each day but are artifact level of rarity.
