Dragon Moth Species in Belthuran | World Anvil

Dragon Moth

"Dragon Moths are capable musicians if left to their own devices if you listen at the edge of a Crystal Garden they can harmonize with the crystals in a way that is alien, surreal, and unforgettable."   -Jadice Wisstler, Teacher at the Silver college
Dragon Moths are an example of the 'Dragon-Touched' phenomena where creatures or objects are altered by being in the presence of the arcane energies produced by dragons. No one knows what the original kind of moth was that was altered but now they are a unique creature that has embedded themselves into the ecosystem in such a way that it doesn't harm any other species.   Large for a moth they are around a foot(30cm) wide from wing tip to wing tip and about six inches (16 cm) long whose bodies are covered in small scales with membrane wings covered in glittering scales that change colors controlled by the Dragon Moth. Their antenna reaches out in such a way to fan out so the antenna have their broadside facing forward. Their eyes are not segmented like most insects they are singular eyes with draconic style iris.   Dragon Moths are drawn to magic, in particular areas where it is concentrated or there are many spells being cast often. It isn't uncommon to find them living in long-abandoned ruins with magical artifacts of great power. If left in peace they will trill and harmonize with each other which has a stabilizing effect on magic in the area. Those who know of this trait can use them as magical detectors, some rulers keep some in their audience chambers to watch out for magical manipulations, if someone is casting spells or wearing enchanted items the moths will be drawn to them.   A Dragon Moth has the ability to harmonize with magic to stabilize it, which has the side benefit of extending spells if there are enough of them in an area they can keep a spell going far beyond its normal limit. The opposite is true if agitated they will become to emit a discordant trill that disrupts magic and cancels spells in the area. Scholars believe that Dragon Moths like some of the more talented bards are able to tap into the same sound that the Great Binding emits their music having a resonance within the arcane realm due to this.

Trill

The Dragon Moth can use their ability to trill in one of two ways, this gets stronger the more Dragon Moths are in 10 feet of another using the same kind of Trill, this allows for large areas to be affected as each moth has a 10ft radius.
Harmonize
For every Dragon Moth using Harmonize in the area, all spells with durations are extended this can allow a spell to exceed its maximum duration. An attempt to end a spell requires a caster check of DC 5 + 1 for every moth using Harmonize in the area. This stays in effect until the Dragon Moths stop using Harmonize, if a silence spell is used it does not benefit from this effect and prevents the affected Moths from being able to contribute to Harmonize. A caster can stop concentrating on a spell with Dragon Moths using Harmonize and it will be a persistant effect on the battlefield, saves that negate effects still apply as normal.
Discordance
When Dragon Moths are using Discordance it requires all casters to make a spellcasting check of DC 5 + 1 for every moth using the Discordance Trill in the area. This stays in effect until the Dragon Moths stop using Discordance and requires a check each round a spell is being maintained or a new one cast. When using a Dragon Moth Swarm count the HD of the swarm as the bonus to the DC. if a silence spell is used it does not suffer from this effect and prevents the affected Moths from being able to contribute to Discordance.

Basic Information

Ecology and Habitats

Crystal Gardens and other magically rich areas are their favored locations but given that Habrea is a highly magical world they can be found anywhere, even on or around powerful magic users. It is common for them to live around areas with dragons.

Dietary Needs and Habits

They are sustained by magic but how they consume or process it is largely unknown but it is believed to be symbiotic in nature, if dragons are the source of magic the Dragon Moths might be seen as something eating 'bacteria' that grows on it.

Biological Cycle

A Dragon Math can live around 50 years owing to the infusion of draconic magic.

Additional Information

Average Intelligence

A Dragon Moth is intelligent enough to be trained but they cannot speak vocally, they can use their trills to speak to one another and can understand Draconic. If a comprehend language spell is used and understanding can be granted but it is not truly words more impressions of meaning.   An interesting part of their intelligence is another factor from their dragon-touched nature, they are rather vain creatures with a high opinion of themselves and do not appreciate being treated poorly.

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Able to sense magic in its natural state or being cast even if under the effects of still/silent (subtle) spell. They can also detect spell-like abilities.
Lifespan
50 years

The concept of a giant month with slit eyes is terrifying, but the concept of a moth that's attracted to magic and trills is adorable, so I'm having mixed emotions. Great creature!!

Singing moths. Better yet, singing moths that can influence magic. These would be handy to have around indeed. I like how you combined a vivid description for the storytellers/readers and the quick facts for RPG purposes.
