Arcane Flood

There are many dangers involved with magic, the most well-known being rampant spells. Rampant spells have many dangers one of which can lead to an Arcane Storm. It is actually very rare for such a storm to form from a rampant spell. Storms that do happen naturally are like any storms in that some don't quite make it. While a hurricane might dissipate with higher-than-normal winds and rain. An Arcane Storm is still a danger if it fails to form. Instead, it results in an Arcane Flood. A flood is when all the collected magical energy condenses on itself turning into an ooze. As this ooze falls it begins to turn into a heavy fog. With any luck, the ooze disperses into fog long before it reaches the ground. Should the liquid hit the ground it will behave like a flash flood. Rushing over the surface of the land far and fast. The ooze is capable of covering a shocking amount of ground before the earth can absorb the energy back into it.   These floods create areas with the same properties as a crystal garden. They rarely last long enough for crystals to form but are still dangerous. Anything caught in the flow of these floods will become over saturated causing terrible mutations. Developing the abilities of a Hexblood is a mild side effect of such exposure. Those born a Hexblood have a period of time where their body grows with the powers until it is ready to use them. Those who become a Hexblood this way have their body ravaged by magic. Their bodies are altered, painfully, and many do not survive the process. Most will die as their bodies shred themselves apart with mutation others have their minds break.

Manifestation

An Arcane Flood happens in a few ways. The most common is a failed Arcane Storm. The other is if a powerful enchantment or source of magic is destroyed. If this happens in a way that does not dissipate the magic stored within it can lead to disaster. Proper dispelling of magical items is important otherwise their magic bleeds out. With most mundane enchantments that isn't enough to be a problem. When it comes to powerful magic items they can create a localized area of a flood. Even a lesser artifact can flood cities and wide sections of land enough to be a death knell to a country.   From the source of the flood, a fog of blue and purple hues is the first herald. Following closely behind is a sheet of liquid of the same color with the viscosity of hot molasses. This ooze travels with speed across any surface even able to seep into any material. As the ooze settles and seeps into where it has landed the light changes to a shimmering swirl of fog and energy. Anything touched by the ooze is altered organic or not. This does make material affected by the flood valuable to mages for study. It is also highly mutagenic and can easily cause over-saturation in the common folk just being near it.
