Blandishment

Most magic in the world is divided into arcane manipulation and divine thaumaturgy, the former bending the world essences to the mage's will and the latter either damaging or healing the body or spirit . However, a third kind of magic exists in the outer reaches of knowledge, almost defying study. A more primal, naturalistic magic concerns communing with the spirit of a living being, whether plant, animal, or other, and convincing it affect the body in a way agreed on between the caster and the spirit. This communion is more cooperative than manipulation, so the few that study this kind of magic call it blandishment, indicate a coaxing of the spirit rather than force. Blandishment is traditionally used on plants or animals, but it can be used on Kiried folk by especially power blandishers. It is difficult though because a strong kiri can get in the way of the communication between the blandisher and the spirit, and the resistance gets stronger if the blandisher tries to change or control the body in a way the kiri rejects. Compared to arcane magic, blandishment is much more fluid and difficult to categorize, but the few lledriologists have managed to note a few common forms that brandishment take.

Alteration

One of the more visible forms of blandishing is called alteration by lledriologists, but commonfolk are more likely to call in transformation. Alteration generally takes the form of a body changing from one kind of living thing to the next, such as a deer being transformed into a pig or a fly being transformed into a bush. More powerful blandishers can even take Kiried beings like humans or elves and turn them into animals or plants. However, while this transformation is more known, alteration can take on other, subtler forms. A common use of alteration is to change to properties of a living thing. For example, one can alter a toxin in a berry to not be harmful to humans, or change the oils in a root to act as a medicine. Alteraion can also make living thrings grow faster, although this is usually not used with animals as they have a limit to how big they can get before their bodies fail.

Command

Another well known form of blandishment is command, in which a blandisher convinces the spirit to move the body in a way the blandisher desires. It is important to note that the spirit can always reject a blandisher's command if it finds it abhorent. However, as long as the spirit consents, the blandisher can command the body to do whatever they want. Animals can be commanded to move body parts, go to different locations, or even fight on behalf of the blandisher. Plants can be commanded to shift around, such as vines or roots twirling around someone or branches moving apart to allow a path forward. Commands are the most difficult blandishment to perform on Kiried due to the mind rebelling too much.

Elucidation

Less flashy, but just as important, elucidation is one of the most vital tools of blandishers who act as village healers. Elucidation is when a blandisher communes with a spirit to learn information about a body or that a body knows. Its most common use is to diagnose an injury or illness to determine what exactly is wrong before administering healing. Other uses for elucidation is the use of animal spies or sentries in the forest or asking flora and fauna about who has gone through the area recently. Elucidation is the easiest blandishment to perform on Kiried as no change is happening to the body, so it is less likely to resist the communion.

Bonding

The least known about for of blandishment is the ability to create a spiritual bond between the blandisher and the blandished. When bonded in such a way, the blandisher can share any senses with the bonded: seeing what they see, hearing what they hear. One can also send their thoughts through the bond, and transmit those thoughts to those nearby the bond creature. If one remains bonded with the same creature for long enough, then they can form a more permanent Familiar bond, where thoughts relay between the two more easily and the Familiar slowly gains more kiri as it tries to aid their blandisher more. It is difficult to bond with Kiried, as the mind views the bond as another mind trying to take over the body and rejects it. While a bond can be temporarily formed, it is impossible to make a Kiried into a Familiar.

Witchcraft

While scholars of magic call it blandishment, commonfolk have a much more common phrase for it: witchcraft. Unfortunately, with this different name comes a different connotation Instead of viewed as a peaceful communication with nature, witchcraft is viewed as a dark magic that bends peoples' spirits to the witch's will, similar to kiri manipulation. This common view of blendishment has even wormed its way up to government officials, as witchcraft has the same criminal restrictions as kiri manipulation. Because of this, witches often have to hide the nature of their magic, disguising it as just herbal knowledge or a natural skill for dealing with animals.   The stigma surrounding witchcraft also afftects how blandishment is taught and passed on. Instead of having formal schools like mages and devotarees, which would surely be shut down and all witches hanged, witchcraft is taught in close apprenticeships, where an older witch finds someone with a prediliction and an open mind to teach all of their secrets. Sometimes, if there are enough witches in an area and they think they can avoid observation, they'll form a coven to discuss blandishment and trade techniques, and teach any viable apprentices they find.
