Thaumaturgy

Sometimes called divine magic, thaumaturgy is the cousin of manipulation, being performed by priests of the realm as opposed to scholarly mages or esoterics. While manipulations deal with the world essences, thaumaturgy instead deals with the triad of life, specifically the body and the spirit. Instead of manipulating the components of the triad, thaumaturgy instead focuses on either repairing or deteriorating them. Each independent act of thaumaturgy is called a miracle, due to its heavy association with religion. There are two main ways someone is able to harness the powers of thaumaturgy: devotion and suffering.

Style

Reparation

Reparation thaumatury is the more common, and deals in healing the body or the spirit. Thaumaturges tend to focus on healing the body, since it can more easily and commonly be harmed. Repairing the body can range from healing cuts and bruises, banishing illnesses from the body, and refusing broken bones. For the most part, thaumaturgy can only heals wounds that someone can normally heal from, but supposedly, especially skilled thaumaturges can regrow limbs or cure someone of a fatal illness. Raising the dead, however, is still beyond the power of thaumaturges.   Repairing the spirit, meanwhile, is harder to understand, as the spirit is invisibile to most mortals. Thaumaturges skilled at healing spirits, though, are said to be able to see them, but most do not know if this is rumor or fact. Harm to a spirit usually comes in the form of a generally fading of the spirit after an attack by an undead.   Thaumaturgy cannot heal the soul, largely because if there is any damage to the soul, it will heal itself so fast that a thaumaturge cannot respond.

Decay

Compared to its cousin, decay thaumaturgy is generally feared and banned for twisting a supposed gift of the gods to harm. However, if one does master this ability, they gain the power to directly destroy someone's body or spirit. Similar to reparation, it is easier to decay the body than the spirit. This is usually seen as rotting someone's body part or implanting a disease within them. However, skilled thaumaturges can decay a body so fast that it looks more like it was struck by a manipulation of invisible energy, sometimes leading uneducated folk to believe in a "darkness" energy.   If a thaumaturge trains themselves to harm the spirit, they can essentially weaken a spirit the same an undead would when they absorb some of the spirit, causing a person to grow weakened and weary. This is the only someone can harm an undead spirit, like a ghost. Additionally, especially skilled thaumaturges can essentially punch "holes" into someone's spirit, causing their personality and awareness of the world to twist and fold in on itself. These holes are usually unable to be healed outside of the most powerful of thaumaturges.   Additionally, while little is known about how it can be done, or even if it can be done, people also believe that a thaumaturge of enough power can attack someone's soul. This would destroy the arcane energy holding their body and spirit together, instantly killing the target.

Methods

Devotarees

The most common form of thaumaturgy is gained through devotion to a god. While the specific mechanics are not known, people will usually know when they've achieved enough devotion when something "clicks" within themselves. Miracles from devotion thaumaturges, often called devotarees, specialize in reparation thaumaturgy, espeically of the body. As such, devotarees often serve as religious leaders who heal their flock, or village healers who their fellow man with little compensation. Increasing in power as a devotaree usually includes both training with the miracles one knows and increasing their devotion to their deity, with some complex miracles even requiring a sacrifice. On the flip side, if someone's devotion wanes, then they risk losing what powers they have. It should also be noted that on rare occasions, someone's dedication to a cause can also grant them thaumaturgy.

Martyrs

While devotarees gain their powers from faith, martyrs gain thaumaturgy when they experience enough hardship that something "snaps" within them, the same way something "clicks" for devotarees. These miracles are often viewed less as a gift from the gods, but rather a consolation for their pain, and potentially a method for retribution since most martyrs specialize in decay thaumaturgy. While a devotaree's power increases as they gain more devotion, a martyr's base power is determined all at once, depending on how sever their "break" was, with their powers never weakening, even if they resolve the trauma that granted them their powers, and their powers never growing with additional traumas.
