Kortsanei

Throughout most of the Conian Isles, most of the inhabitants observe Kortsanei, which is orchestrated by two or possibly more clan leaders. Kortsanei is a week-long festival that brings together single men and women from two or more clans. The idea is to create new couples for marriage in order to prevent inbreeding within clans.

History

Not much is known about when and where Kortsanei originated, but most historians agree that it was created around the same time clans were first developed in the isles around 8,000 years ago. Originally, Kortsanei would not involve any prospect of marriage. Instead, it would just be a festival akin to free love between two clans. The goal was roughly still the same - to prevent inbreeding - but had a more hedonistic take to it. This eventually changed with the advent of the spread of Purianism in the isles roughly 1,000 years ago, as Purianism had a more serious take on the conceiving of children, as well as spreading the institution of monogamy. As Kortsanei was a very important part of the Conian culture, the Islanders simply added the element of marriage to the festival. This, however, didn't change what went on at the festivals. Sex was still a major part of it all, but at the end of the festival, every single person had to have a partner in marriage.

Execution

The way Kortsanei is set up is that at least two clan chiefs approach each other with the offer of marriage between two of their own children. Once they reach an agreement on when and where Kortsanei would be held, the clan chiefs will bring all the single men and women from their clan who are considered of age (with the exception of the chief's children who were not a part of the original marriage agreement) and have a large feast for seven days. On each day, a different game will be played with the intention to pair a male and female from each of the clans together in order to improve chances of marriage. Everyone has a different partner on each day. On the first day, a game of ball is played. On the second day, marathon runs, with each pairing tied to one another with rope. On the third day, Chidabo - wrestling that involves four people - matches are held. On the fourth day, melee tournaments are held. This tournament is the only game where it only involves men. The winner also gets to choose a woman of his choosing. On the fifth day, women play a game of paint sac, which involves two women trying to tag each other with a ball filled with paint that will explode on impact. The winner will be able to marry a man of her choosing. On the sixth day, no games are held. The day will be instead focused on each man and woman figuring out who they will marry. Once these decisions are finalized, the wedding celebrations will begin on the seventh day. Once these are done, the new couples will return to the men's homes. Not all men and women will have a partner, however. Some will simply not be able to find a suitable partner and will be single until the next Kortstanei is held.

Observance

Kortsanei is usually held during the summer but can be held whenever, as long as both clan leaders accept the date.
