Murk
Murk is the capital of the County of Geryatdale, as well as its largest settlement. Established around the year 2R3600 over the ruins of an old Marlish colony (itself built upon the ruins of a former Gero outpost on the foot of Mount Gero), Murk was the first major Gerish population center and remains the heart of Gerish culture. Over the next few centuries, it became known as a regional center of artisanship, particularly stonework, as well as a center of commerce on the road between the more prosperous regions of Frigam and Charl. By the year 2R4000 it had grown enough in size and influence to be declared the formal administrative capital of the County of Geryatdale, though the reigning House of Geryatdale remained in its traditional seat at Fort Vigilance.
Demographics
The population consists largely of Gerishmen, and a minority of Charlishmen. Most Gerishmen are either thralls or churls, though some families, including the influential Picti Clan, are legally thanes.
Government
The Burgomaster of Murk is an elected position; typically, candidates are elected by the Council of Clans, which has the full support of the Count. In practice, this leads to the burgomaster often hailing from one of the city's influential Gerish clans, though a Charlish burgomaster is not unheard of. The election of the burgomaster is technically an informal privilege, as the burgomaster legally serves at the pleasure of the count. In practice, the Council has entrenched itself to the point that the Count often only confirms its choice.
The burgomaster of Murk has expanded administrative power, and administers much of Geryatdale in the Count's stead. This included collecting tax and tribute from settlements, levying road taxes, conducting the census, and granting charters for the foundation of a new settlement. The Count typically handles military operations, including the town guard, through a liaison sent from Fort Vigilance.
