The Unkindness Building / Landmark in Baltimore By Dark | World Anvil

The Unkindness

The Unkindness started as a high-end restaurant in Fells Point called the Twisted Tree. Count Lucien Corbin stumbled his way into the Twisted Tree during his quest to establish a haven and nightclub in the city. Upon entry, he would first fall in love with an exquisite painting of the ceiling depicting Angels and Demons in battle. Lucien then met Rebekah "Bex" Langly, who would become his Ghoul and mentee and then later his adopted Grandchilde.   Lucien insisted on buying the place, having Bex, the hostess at the time, call the owner in to meet him. Using his gifts of persuasion, Lucien convinced the man to sell to him at a reasonable price, and renovations quickly went underway. Lucien kept on most of the staff, simply converting them into his employees needed for the club. Still, after using mental powers to question the previous owner about Bex's capabilities, he hired her on as a manager. Now, Bex essentially runs the place as Lucien's junior partner, and the club is one of the hottest in Baltimore.

Architecture

The club's architecture is fitting of a vampire's nature. The outside is a charming, two-story brick building on the main street in Fells Point. Over every door is an engraving of Lucien's sigil, a raven in flight gripping a stylized 'L' in its talons and a rose in its beak.   The main doors lead into a small, similarly, charming lobby where security searches patrons for weapons or contraband and checks IDs. Patrons over 21 have their hand stamped with Lucien's sigil; those under receive an X instead.   Upon entering the club proper, the patrons greet the true dark nature of the club. The lighting is dim, with red shades used most prominently, and dark sculptures and artwork are scattered throughout the room and on the walls. The main floor consists of a large lounge area to the left with a plethora of couches, seats, and tables, as well as a massive bar and medium-sized kitchen. The dance floor dominates the center of the room, and the right side contains the DJ area and bathrooms for guests. Further back by the kitchens, a closed-off door leads to employee break and locker rooms, Lucien and Bex's offices, and a locked door that leads down to Lucien's underground apartment haven. The haven is large and spacious despite being underground and has multiple hidden tunnels leading to elsewhere in the city.   Two-iron wrought staircases on either side of the main floor lead up to the second-floor VIP area. There are more places to sit and eat, another bar, various smaller VIP booths, and Lucien's far-end private VIP lounge. A railing encircles the second-floor area, securing the central cut-out in the floor that exposes the dance floor below to the VIP guests. The private lounge has its own bar and seating area and is closed off from the rest of the club, soundproofed against the noise.
The club's artwork and sculptures are darkly beautiful. Sculptures of ravens and monsters are dotted periodically throughout the club. Paintings, all Lucien's, adorn the walls. The most central piece resides over the far wall of the dance floor, visible to all entering the club. It depicts a seductively posed, nude Corinthia as she waters an exquisite garden with a pail full of blood.   Lucien kept the painting of angels and demons in battle on the ceiling of the old restaurant. However, with the club's dim lighting, it is challenging to discern angel from demon, an intentional design on Lucien's part.
