Personal history

Dion Hatzis (Known within the organization of the Free Jackals as Quill) grew up son to a wealthy parchment manufacturer in the Pedonian city state of Pylaeus. His father’s parchment business operated a strong and healthy distribution network across several countries, selling primarily high quality spell-grade parchment along with other spell components and magical supplies. Quill spent most of his youth (age 8-16) traveling with his father’s assistant - Mikaelis - who brought Quill with him on business trips and materials research all over Pedonia and beyond. On these journeys to far away cities and cultures, Quill learned to enjoy a wide diversity of different music, food, beverage, and ways of life.   Raised and groomed to be the future records keeper and eventual manager of the parchment business, Quill was bombarded with academic lessons, tutoring, and a schedule that stole him away from his youth and any genuine and naturally formed interests.   Despite developing strong organizational and record-keeping skills, Quill was not interested in business. Instead, he would find himself lost for hours studying and learning about military logistics, battle tactics, and fighting styles.   As a result of his family’s well known wealth and social prominence, Quill, at the age of 16, and his younger sister were targeted by an organized crime group and kidnapped. Not one hour after being brought back to the mob’s hideout, the Pylaean guard ambushed the crime operation, and in a brilliantly planned operation rescued Quill and his sister from their kidnappers. Quill, enamored with the elegance and precision of the Pylaean guard, immediately sought to shift his career focus to combat and military service. To say Quill’s father was frustrated at this decision would be an understatement.   Dion’s father chastised him for making such a foolish and wasteful choice, especially “in a country that would surely never see any need for major military investment in [Quill’s] lifetime.” The result of several heated arguments, Quill’s father disowned him and cast him from the family business. Quill to this day would attest that his father viewed him as nothing more than a failed business investment.   The Pylaean guard quickly accepted Quill into their ranks, placing him under the mentorship of chief officer Omiros Rondellis. Quill studied under Omiros for many years, learning to become an unrivaled polearm master as well as a shrewd military tactician.   The years’ passing would eventually bring news of war and destruction. Word of Telemon's growing power murmured through the Pedonian taverns and marketplaces. Dion’s strong friendships with merchants, traveling soldiers, and common folk provided a nutritious influx of information and stories regarding Telemon’s emerging empire. It did not take long for Dion to see that the Pedonian city states were in jeopardy. Even united, the cities posed little threat to Telemon’s forces. But Pedonia’s power never resided within military strength. It was the rich culture, the libraries, the universities, the knowledge, the philosophies, and everything else unseen that made Pedonia and its people powerful. From listening to tales of Telemon, Dion knew that this wealth of culture, ideas, and freedoms would either be snuffed out immediately, or quietly and slowly exterminated. Either way, the glory and shimmer of Pedonian culture would not survive.   Dion began to spread radical ideas of opposition, demanding efforts be made to call upon fellow Pedonian states, seek international support from the south, and create a unified front against Telemon. Omiros strongly opposed Dion on his attempts at resistance and implored him to stop generating needless fear and worry in the battlements.   Finding no support for his cause and ambitions, Dion abandoned his loyalty to the Pylaean Guard. He viewed his choice as a tactical move to preserve his battle talents and knowledge of tactical warfare for a better chance at defeating Telmon. In an exchange of honor for hope, Dion would pack his belongings, abandon his comrades, and flee the city in the darkness of night.   Dion would eventually journey to what he knew to be the best and last hope against Telemon. Upon arriving, Dion found the city in turmoil and disorder, having a similar apathy towards Telemon, and overwhelmed by the clamor of local and immediate concerns.   He would eventually hear of the works of The Free Jackals, and, seeing their efforts as the best chance at unifying the city against Telemon, gain entry into their ranks by fighting in the Renelestre gladiatorial competitions. Dion was renamed Quill upon swearing his oath to the Jackals and their quest to defeat Telemon.   After two months of working with the Jackals, Quill would be stationed with 20 other men at the entrance of Ringwell after its discovery by the Jackals Senior Officers, ordered to defend it. His station would overlap with Genvita Caliota Ruva'il's attempted rise to power, and the sundering of Ringwell’s gateway. In battling with the monsters that arose from Ringwell’s opening, Quill attained a battlefield promotion when officer Hounds took a crippling blow and was left incapacitated during the fight.   Later after the battle, Quill would give the official battle report to the senior officers. In terms of agenda items, his report conveniently fell directly subsequent to the resignation of Senior Officer Hackles. The senior officers, already late for another engagement elsewhere in the city and in need of another senior officer, promoted Quill there and then before all speeding off to the next agenda item.
