Hrae'meSniku

Carrion Slug

Hrae eat the waste of the Realm.
For the average citizen the Hrae are vile disgusting creatures, and no sympathy was felt during the early history of the Realm when the Hrae’s existence was noted, and throughout the following ages as various attempts to cleanse this species from the Realm were attempted. Historically, some very famous Citizens participated in these attempts displaying great heroism, dedication and devotion to the principles of The Devouring Mother and Her Will. Many purges of this spieces from cities and settlements were successful.
In the year 25,454 Rs through the mercy of the Devouring Mother and the studious research of the Brotherhood Medicaments, the Hrae’s place in the natural order of the Realm was detailed and acknowledged. This wisdom ended any official mandate to eradicate the Hrae as a species against nature and Her Will, demonstrating The Devouring Mother’s compassion for Her Realm and its creatures.

The Hrae are apex scavengers. Physically they appear to many, slug like, however that is merely a first impression as they are often encounter in dim lighting or deep shadows under major settlements in the Realm, or in natural occurring cavern networks that can be found through the various regions. Ti Sti'duram'iti and Aut'tep'ko are known to have extensive cavern networks, so it is not surprising that Hrae are encounter more frequently in these regions as compared to others. Be assured though, given the age and ancient history of the Realm, even regions such as Gle'lanèrino, the flat sea of grass, also host Hrae.
They spend the majority of their time in a semi-hibernation state conserving energy and slowly growing. When there are active they are very dangerous. They have explosive speed, and larger ones can easily out mass a draft horse.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Hrae are symmetrical creatures without limbs. Similar to a slug, but distinct.
The front of the Hrae has its two ‘eye stalks’. They are not eye’s in that the Hrae sees with them, but they do serve as sensory organs. The stalks are prehensile and highly flexible allowing the Hrae to move them as needed to sense prey, food, or danger. The mouth of the Hrae sits slightly forward of the ‘eye stalks’ and contains between 2 and 8 rows of teeth. The teeth fall out and are replaced be a tooth from the row behind. More mature Hrae have more rows of teeth.
The body of the Hrae is malleable, very malleable. It can adjust its mass to fit through small openings as it has no hard bones or structures. It can also create multiple tentacles to strike, grab, or pierce prey or food items. Young Hrae typical use two tentacles, and older may use more.

Biological Traits

The body of the Hrae is covered in fine hair follicles which trap a slightly acidic oil against their form. This oil is generally considered to be a natural product of the Hrae and may enable it to ‘digest’ organic material that it hibernates on or under.
The oil is slow acting and generally not harmful to casual brief touch, but does eventually dissolve organic substances.

Genetics and Reproduction

It is believed that the Hrae are asexual, and reproduce after a certain age of maturity by simply dividing into two or more smaller Hrae.
This theory is currently the most popular amongst honoued scholars and explorers as it accounts for much of the Hrae behaviours and their capacity to suddenly appear in large numbers.

Another theory postulates that the Hrae are bisexual in nature, but have the capacity to transition between genders based on environmental stressors or triggers. This theory is only supported by a minority of scholars, based on a few questionable samples of what are claimed to be Hrae brood eggs that had been preserved through a natural occurrence of “pickling” in the sewers of Skala-Tuq. These samples are infamously/famously known as the Arbinnas Eggs. So, named by the Orc Engineer who recovered them.

Growth Rate & Stages

Many scholars and the Brotherhood would like greater details regarding these processes. There are many records of encounters with Hrae. Almost all of them end with the Hrae’s death and are encounters told by more practical citizens.
Currently, what is generally accepted by scholars due to a lack of consistency is that Hrae start out small, grow bigger, eat more, and then die at the hands of hunters. No, natural death of a Hrae has been recorded, and not birth has been seen.
Also, no citizen has devoted any serious amount of time in an attempt to study these creatures. When asked, many just don’t care to. They are disgusting after all.

Ecology and Habitats

Hrae typically are found in places where the waste of the Realm is collected. This means they tend to inhabit sewer systems, waste dumps and those natural areas that other creatures tend to die. They tend to avoid the light, but are no harmed by it.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Between periods of near hibernation the Hrae eat whatever dead organic matter they can find and will often attempt to kill living creatures they come across. If the fight is too dangerous, they will flea.

Biological Cycle

Unkown.

Unknown

Domestication

Absolutely not.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

None. This are truly disgusting creatures.

Average Intelligence

Low Animal

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Hrae have blindsight for 10 meters. They see clearly in complete darkness, can not be blinded by bright lights, heat or other typical energy bursts.
They also have a unique capability to sense the living in the area around them. The range of this capacity is not known precisely, but experience and studies have shown that Hrae know the general location of every living creature within 30 meters of them. If the Hrae is awake, it is a practical impossibility to surprise them.
Traditionally, Hrae hunters use mechanical means to track or locate the Hrae before hand, this allows them to attack with overwhelming force and surprise. This method is still used when large infestations are found near settlements and cities.
Lifespan
Unknown
Conservation Status
Jade List - Least Concern
Average Height
Various - large Hrae can have a height of a few feet depending on how it controts its mass.
Average Weight
Various - 1kg - 312kg ish.
Average Length
Various - Hrae do tend to ‘lay’ more so then not, so can have a rather long body length. Some have been noted to be as long as 3 or 4 meters.
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
Hrae are uniformly shades of black allowing them quite an ability to remain hidden in the dark.

Size Type -
Small - Large depending on age
Danger Level -
Medium
Speed -
Very Fast.
Armour Class -
Good. Their hide is very tough, and their body almost entirely muscle. This provides a high resistance to blows and slashes which also allows the Hrae to ignore most environmental hazzards.
Attacks each round -
2 - 8 melee attacks.
Hrae will create an number of tentacles based on its maturity. They may attack any target around the Hrae within range.
Reach -
5ft - 30ft.

Special Qualities -
BlindSight and LifeSense.
Treasure -
Random bits found in their gullet or around them in their lair that has not been digested or passed appropriate for the area they have laired under.
Tactics -
Hrae will always attempt to ambush live prey. They will use the environment to hide and wait for an opportune moment. They will continue to attack until substantially injured at which point they will attempt to escape.
As the Hrae have no ‘hard’ structures in their body, this means that they may slip through practically any hole, crack or crevasse with enough time.
Upon occasion they will be encountered in a ‘family’ unit where there are several young Hrae together. They do attempt to work together, but not very intelligently.
