BrynvaYo-Jarhu

Armoured Mole

Bryna are native to the The Glaze. They are roughly the size of large dogs fully grown. Like all moles they are blind, have powerful legs with nasty claws, and hunt through vibration and smell. They are either found in small family groups called, Nests, or singularly as young adults. Mated Bryna are typically older, battle scared, and meaner then their young.

A particular mutation, above and beyond their giant size, that makes Bryna particularly difficult to kill is their scale-like armour which covers their body in practical totality. This armour protects them from injury and reinforces their own body structure. This makes them particularly resistant to blunt damage and tunnel collapses, further as they borrow the armour is polished against the tunnel edges to an almost mirror sheen.

Bryna are omnivores and will eat most plants and animals. If they are healthy they will easily live at least five to eight years and mated pairs will have between two and five mole pups each breeding season, roughly eight months.

Mole pups mature quickly after six months and will leave the home den to spend their young adult hood as a solitary nomad until such time as they find a suitable mate. During these years mole pups are hunted by other Glaze predators. Solitary young adults are significantly easier to kill or capture, and are thus hunted actively by the citizens of the Glaze. Their hides are particularly tough and sturdy, making excellent durable leather products and their bone/iron armour plating is used extensively in various manufacturing industries from simple household goods, to larger machines, or structures requiring protection. These processes often require the purifying and refining of the plates into bone char and iron ingots.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Similar to the common mole, but giant.

Genetics and Reproduction

Having two sexes, they mate for life and generally have a litter of 2-5 pups every year. Pups mature after six months and leave to seek their own territory soon after. It is during this exploration period that many pups find mates.

Growth Rate & Stages

BrynvaYo mature quickly. They spend less then 2 weeks dependent on their parents for sustenance and are capable of foraging with their parents at that point. By the second month of their life, their armoured scales have begun to develop and have completed their development by the 4th month.

Ecology and Habitats

Underground. They are one of the more successful species of animals living under the Glaze.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Typically BrynvYo will eat roots. However, they will also eat anything they can chew. Most metal is out, but they hav been known to eat softer rocks and soils when other foods are scarce.

Additional Information

Domestication

They are domesticated in some more remote areas of the Glaze, but in general, many consider them too much work to bother with. Hunting them in the wild is a more popular method of aquiring them and its a good tourist business as well.

Uses, Products & Exploitation

BrynvaYo are considered almost entirely vermin. When they den close to settlements they are ruthlessly hunted as they will destroy crops, eat domestic animals, and destroy structures. It's fortunate that their hide and armour is valuable once tanned or refined.
Their flesh is almost inedible for many realm citizens. Many report a strong offensive back taste once swallowed, but there are a few recipes made famous through the Feast of Songs which are rather delicious. How the back taste is eliminated is typically a secret.

Geographic Origin and Distribution

They are found through out the entirety of Gle'lanèrino. They tend to den some 2 - 4 meters underground or in already established found structures such as ruined foundations of lost settlements.

Average Intelligence

Animal

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

While blind, they have the capacity to 'see' using the vibrations in the surrounding area and to tack and 'see' by sent for the full length of their burrowed tunnels. This makes them almost impossible to surprise, and helps them accurately locate intruders for ambush.
Lifespan
5 years
Conservation Status
Jade List - Least Concern
Average Height
Adults - 0.5 meters at the should on all fours.
Average Weight
Adults - 40 kgs - they are heavier animals due to their armour.
Average Length
Adult - 1.3 m
Body Tint, Colouring and Marking
BrynvaYo are easily recognizable as moles. They have no fur as they are covered in earth toned scales which provide them protection and camouflage. Their paws are oversized and have very large sharp claws and thick paws to help with borrowing.
Geographic Distribution
Size Type -
Medium
Danger Level -
Medium to High
Speed -
Crafty fast. They burrow really well.
Armour Class -
Very Good, because of very serious armour which makes them very resistant to most damage, and practically immune to crushing forces.
Attacks each round -
2 Slashes - moderately painful,
or 1 bite - very painful and nasty due to infection,
Reach -
5ft

Special Qualities -
Track by scent, vibration sense, sent sense, and burrowing.
Treasure -
Typically if the den is near a city or town, there is a good chance for a few coins and other miscellaneous items.
Tactics -
Typically, they will flee. If they can not or if they are defending their den they will fight by distracting the threat while another adult burrows to flank. Pups will burrow to safety if possible.
