The Origins of the Asirim Myth in Ayrith | World Anvil

The Origins of the Asirim

Summary

In the middle of the Second Era legend tells that necromancers from the land that would later become known as Dyrai invaded the early lands of Nairiume. The people of the family clans within Nairiume, at the time with no magic of their own, struggled to fight the effects of necromancy. They learned early that necromancers were mere mortals and not immune to fatal wounds. Getting close enough to kill a necromancer, however, was quite difficult as they usually used magic shields for protection. These shields also made it quite difficult to kill necromancers with projectiles.

Many of the military leaders of early Nairiume had female companions with them for comfort, and these women traveled with the armies as they battled the invaders. One of these women was Amaelietta, lover to the Grand Commander, he who oversaw the overall movementts of the united army. One night, when all seemed hopeless, Amaelietta had a vision that told her how she could protect her people for generations to come. She and the other women would cross into the nearby camp of the army of Dyrai and seduce the most powerful necromancers in order to kill them. During this process they would conceive babies that would have magic to protect them all from the necromancers.

The Grand Commander was reluctant to allow this to happen, but eventually relented. The following evening, Amaelietta and a hundred other women ventured into the enemy camp and to the tents of the necromancers. There they successfully seduced the men and killed them in the midst of their climax, when they were most distracted. The following morning the army found their commanders dead. Without strong leadership and direction, the army melted away.

By the end of the year, Amaelietta and all but two of the women who had gone into the camp had given birth to children with unique magic that made them perfectly suited to fighting necromancers. They were the first Asirim.

Historical Basis

It is known that the necromancers of what would eventually be known as Dyrai did frequently attack other countries in search of resources unavailable on their island nation, resorting to violence and aggression instead of trade alliances. However, exactly when Amealietta lived is unclear, as the necromancer leaders and the Grand Commander are not named in her legend.

Spread

This is not a commonly-taught legend due to its mature nature, but many Asirim know of it, as well as many adults interested in the history of the Second Era.

Variations & Mutation

Some variations on the legend have Amaelietta going to the enemy camp without the knowledge of the Grand Commander, or against his command. Others have her and the other women seducing and murdering the entire enemy army, not only the necromancers. Still others claim she was the only one to become pregnant and that all Asirim are descended from her.

Cultural Reception

Most Asirim accept this legend as the origin of their magic, though which version they choose to believe often varies by the person. Most consider Amaeliette to be the origin of the Asirim magic, even if she was not the only one to bear Asirim children, as her vision led to the creation of the Asirim.

In Literature

Many books have been written recounting the legend or inspired by it. Some were clearly written to show the strength and power of women to change the world around them. Others were written with an objectively historical perspective. Others still were written with detailed sexual scenes for the enjoyment of the reader (and author).

In Art

Most visual interpretations of this legend focus on the act of seduction and assassination. Most are both highly erotic and very violent. A small portion of the art about this legend show Amaeliette or another woman heavily pregnant, usually holding a weapon of some kind in one hand.
