Gveltbilva Condition in Ayonerra | World Anvil

Gveltbilva

Gveltbilva (Star Fever) is a potentially fatal condition affecting Dunyar mages who took too much magic from their stars. It most frequently occurs during intense stress or emotional instability. However, Gveltbilva can arise when the mage knowingly exceeds their limits.

The dunyar can’t take the toll, leading to either temporary or permanent harm to their body and mind. The severity varies based on the mage's mental traits, the speed and amount of absorbed magic, and how powerful the link with their star is.
Common symptoms:
  • Hearing their star’s voice
  • Headache
  • Irritability
  • Sensitivity to light and sudden noise
  • Confusion
  • Slurred speech
  • Hallucinations
  • Paranoia
  • Lack of self-care
Severe Symptoms:
  • Loss of magic as the body’s self-defense mechanism
  • Body weakness
  • Seizures
  • Loss of consciousness
  • Organ failure
  • Shortened lifespan
  • Death

Treatment

Dunyar doctors learn to sense the invisible link between the mage and their star. They can then manipulate the “thread”, weaken the connection and allow the body to heal. Although link mending needs deep knowledge and skill. If the healer holds back and doesn’t weaken the connection enough, the symptoms persist and can lead to death.

If the doctor diminishes the connection too much and accidentally severs the thread, the dunyar becomes Unliked and cannot use magic. But sometimes, cutting the link can be the only way to save the person's life.

Prevention and self-treatment

Many dunyar parents raise their children in a calmer environment and teach them how to handle intense emotions. Emotional control and maturity when studying magic are vital to avoid Gveltbilva. Some dunyars learn to temporarily weaken their links during intense events.

Occasionally, the mage can make a deal with their star and heal their body. The price depends on the star, their mood and relationship with the connected mage. Example being Reon Kin'Ghaard, who sacrificed his children’s link to stars to regain his health and lifespan.

Man, Reon sounds like an ***.   This is a scary condition. Poor dunyar mages need to be careful. D:

Reon was in the middle of a war so thought it was a necessary sacrifice.
