Sea Elf

Appearance & Physiology

Like all the elf sub-species, they share the same overall traits. Compared to humans, they are typically more slender and a little taller on average. Of course, a notable distinction between the two species is the Elves' more pointed features, especially their pointed ears. Amongst their elven brethren, Sea Elves stand out for their bluish skin tones. However, some Sea Elves have a sandy hue, which can make them difficult to distinguish from the lighter end of their Dust Elf cousins. As for adaptations, the skin of the Sea Elf is somewhat waxy, making them effectively waterproof. This trait, though, is actually an aid for swimming, making it easier to cut through the water. Sea Elves have also developed minor webbing on their hands and feet. Contrary to rumour, Sea Elves cannot breathe underwater, but they do boast impressive lung capacity and are far more efficient in using the air they take in, meaning the time they can spend underwater is vastly more than other species.

History

The myths surrounding the origin of the first four main species may be debated, but it is clear that out of the four, the Elven species is the most adaptable, especially physically. High Elves and Forest Elves existed pre-Discovery, with the other sub-species developing over time following the spread and settlement during the Age of Discovery. It is ironic that the species with the longest lifespan are the ones that adapt the fastest.

Location & Spread

Sea Elves is a slight misnomer for the majority of their population as most do live on land, but almost all are centred within island nations. Most Sea Elves live on the continent of Drassau, the highest proportion compared to the total populace in the Isle of Ilhon in particular. A small but not insignificant fraction do indeed call the seas their homes, living their lives entirely on ships.

Culture

The Sea Elf culture is mostly comparable to that of the Forest Elves, building mostly on the synergy between civilisation and the land, in this case though, the sea. They rely on careful fishing practices, never endangering wiping out species.
