Sunken Lands

The collapse affected every corner of the world but not to the same degree in all places. Most lands suffered recoverable wounds and ills while others were erased entirely. - Arch Archivist Grau Quillblade.

Overview

According to certain tales, the Chivit Continent used to be at least twice its current size before the The Great Collapse. These days, the land is covered in deep water having sunk during the calamities of the collapse. Hence its name, The Sunken Lands. What remains above the surface are the peaks of mountains or tall hills, depending on how far south and west one goes. The tribes of Chivit have many folktales concerning the Sunken Land, all of which warn would be travelers to keep their distance. Apparently, all manner of dangerous creatures and malevolent forces now inhabit the area.

The Great Underwater Metropolis

A metropolis that eclipses all other ancient settlements in size is said to lie beneath the waters of the Sunken Land. It is said that a vast city once covered the entire southern half of Chivit. It was perhaps the most populous settlement of the The Ancient Order, though no one today could tell you why considering that the location of such a city would mean that part of it would cross the antarctic circle. Due to its apparent scale concerning how much of the sunken places it is believed to cover, the metropolis was a great center of power. Perhaps the climate of the past was not what it is today.   Some say that if one stands on the tall Saib Mountains on a calm and clear afternoon, they can make out spires of various shapes and sizes protruding from the surface of the water all across the Sunken Lands. The closest of these is at least a league away, but is clearly artificial in construction. Amidst this great and seemingly endless collection of protruding spires is also a much greater one. It is believed that this great spire marks the center of the metropolis, the smaller spires being other great ancient constructions. According to folktales, all who attempt to reach these spires to learn their secrets never return. Just one of many concerning stories that highlight the strange and unknown dangers of The Sunken Land.

The southern shores are not blessed with the same life giving forces that are here in the north.

Quiet Shores

Unlike the busy Anestri'for located on the northern end of the continent, there is comparatively less vegetation along the shores surrounding the Sunken Lands. There is also a like decrease in the number of animal life as one travels southward. This has led the locals to describe the shores bordering on the post-collapse waters as the Quiet Shores. It is said that birds do not sing often near the waters.   Within the shallows near the shoreline, for the land slopes down gradually the further into the water one goes, there is a comparative lack of sea life. The sea life that one does come across will either try to hide from sight or aggressively defend their territory. This has led some to suspect that strange magics are at work within and around the ruins of the Sunken Land.

Note(s) from the Archivists:

I'm surprised that we know as much as we do about the Sunken Lands considering our archive is practically on the other side of the world from it. Were the local tribes that forthcoming with their knowledge? Were there even more expeditions to the continent than I know of? - Archivist Savitri   The tribes were as forthcoming as was required out of an interest to prevent others from entering danger and to avoid desecrating a great ancient site, yes. No there haven't been many expeditions from our continent to that place. - Archivist Taenya Naïlo
