Sudden Vanishing

One day you could be in court receiving your sentence, and the next you could find yourself on a sky island. Or you could find yourself in a dark cave... or a bathhouse.... or a volcano.... I'm sure most people who have this condition are fine.
— Maeva, Wizard of the Silver Mountains
The unpredictability of wild magic is its most dangerous characteristic. It can summon fire at one time, or it can banish someone to an unknown place at an unpredictable time. The latter of these is called the Sudden Vanishing. This thankfully extremely rare condition is feared by some, and anticipated by others. Personality is the key factor in how one views this condition. On the one hand, being teleported off to another town or continent is frightening due to the challenges being suddenly displaced brings. On the other hand, it is an unstoppable reset button of sorts for those who like a clean(er) slate.

Vanishings

As it is a magical condition, the Sudden Vanishing has perplexed many mages. One will have to consult the great wizards and sorceresses of our time for details, and tend to keep their secrets until at utmost need. What most everyone can tell you is that a person afflicted with the condition will vanish in as soon as three months to no more than ten full years. The actual vanishing itself is quite sudden, the only sign being some airborne ethereal dust that lingers for a short time afterwards.   The afflicted person is then transported to a random point in Awldor. This could be nearby- in a nearby town- or far away- in another continent. This condition persists for the life of the person with the interval of vanishings seemingly randomized for most people. Some vanish with precise irregularity leading to suspicions on the part of the person that someone afflicted them intentionally.

Causes

Very few people are sure how they contracted this condition. For some, they practiced powerful magic. For others, contact with a magical artifact is all that was required. However it is contracted, its effects are not readily predictable. Some will vanishing fairly quickly after contact with magic, others will take years for symptoms to manifest.

Symptoms

One sign that someone has been afflicted with this strange condition is that they tend to attract small magic fragments. These fragments are the source of the wild magic that fuels Magic Fields and Magic Storms. Thus, an individual afflicted with Sudden Vanishing tend to encounter wild magics more often than normal.   Another sign is a persistent tingling sensation that increases as one approaches their time of vanishing. Alternatively, tinnitus would take the place of tingling. Alternatively, sneezing takes the place of either tingling or tinnitus. Very few people have two symptoms simultaneously. One unfortunate soul is on record for having all three. This is not an entirely comfortable condition for one to have.

Treatment

All that can really be done is to make the individual comfortable, and to ensure they have basic supplies and equipment on their person at all times.   A magical cure is a goal many mages are striving to create, but the rarity and nature of the condition hinders testing and evaluation of such treatments.

Note(s) from the Archivists:

Does anyone vanish into a wall? - Archivist Bob    Well some are never seen again, but that doesn't necessarily imply a wall was involved. - Archivist Enna    So it is a possibility. - Archivist Bob   It's not impossible, but maybe not as probable as you would think. Most processes involving energy tend to take the most efficient route between two points. Matter transported from one site to another will "want" to be reconstituted without as much resistance as possible, which would imply a space with air for a breathing being. - Archivist Taenya Naïlo

I really like that idea. It could really work in a DnD setting as well. Great read.
