Isychia Valley

The valley has something to offer to everyone, as long as they don't bring trouble.
— Kasdon Asker, Farmer

Overview

A large valley encircled by the Evening Mountains. Within the valley is the Reborn City of Haven, the largest settlement in the westernmost reaches of the Continental Island of Dammerung. As the valley is part of the larger Evening Mountain region, long autumns have been a defining feature of the valley. For most of the year, the trees of the Isychia are vibrant oranges, reds, and yellows. Evergreens are a feature of the valley too, providing a near constant presence of greenery to the landscape.   The valley is divided into four regions according to its inhabitants. Each quarter has its own character. The layout of the quarters is often a point of confusion for newcomers to the region. All four regions do not meet at a central point. Rather, the eastern quarter is separated from the western quarter by the northern and eastern quarters. The northern and southern bordering each other along the Mäander River. Each quarter is not a square area of land but more accurately described as very wide and short rectangles.

They say that Livádi is the heart of the valley what with having that city and all.
— Theodas Cosse, Farmer

Eastern Quarter - Livádi

The Reborn City of Haven lies in this quarter and as such it is mostly terraced farmland. This quarter, known also as the Livádi, is also the hilliest of the four regions. The farms are quite huge, and crops such as corn, wheat, barely, oats, rye, and other edible grass seeds are grown in great quantities. Because of the glut of grains, bread making has become a sophisticated art among some bakers of the city of Haven and other towns and villages within the valley. Bread making is held in such high regard that bread is the central piece of the Annual Baker's Festival, an event that not only transforms the look of Haven but every settlement across the eastern Isychia Valley.   This quarter is also home to the easternmost lake, the Tært Vatn. The lake is the source of the Mäander River and is often a destination for romantic escapades.

Western Quarter - Ingovány

The Western Quarter is the most inhospitable quarter of the valley and partly the reason for the valley's somewhat secluded status. While this quarter is very flat it is also very swampy. Locals call the place the Morads. The Morads swampland is vast. There are few paths that one can use to safely travel through it.   Within the Morads are various creatures who use the terrain to remain hidden before attacking. Goblins and gnolls in particular have been an increasingly distressing issue. Fighters of various sorts are often contracted by nearby towns and villages to guard the roads because of the ever present danger to travelers.

Northern Quarter - Nekrotafeío

This quarter of the valley is the rockiest of the four quarters of the Isychia Valley and the sight of ancient ruins. These ruins may have once been a city though most of it has long been destroyed during the collapse. Most people living within the valley do not approach these ruins so that the Undead remain undisturbed.   The Northern Quarter hosts the northern shores of the Hämärä Lake, the northernmost lake, and the Sakona Lake.

Southern Quarter - Erdei

The path to the Private Valley can be found along the southern range of the Evening Mountains. Dense woodlands define most of the terrain of this region of the valley. These woods are home to a wide variety of plant-life as well as the largest trees to be found in the valley. Loggers carefully cultivate the area to ensure the woods remain healthy and that only the finest pieces of wood are harvested and sent to the nearby towns and villages.   The Southern Quarter hosts the southern shores of the Hämärä Lake and the Sakona Lake. The quarter entirely hosts the fourth and southernmost lake of the Mäander River chain, Strudel Lake.

Windy Weather

If anyone could fly without wings they could probably do it here in winter.
— Artur Neha, Traveler
From soft breezes to gale force winds, the valley itself acts as a funnel for air currents. The winds are strongest in winter and weakest in summer. In the extended autumnal season this region is known for, the winds creates the impression of dancing trees. Many people have been known to climb among the largest and strongest trees to experience the tree's swaying motions. Wind chimes are a common feature of Isychia Valley homes. As fun as strong sustained winds can be, it can be hard on flags and other loose items.   Recorded in the Mními Library at Haven is a particularly strong gust of wind flattened buildings and felled trees in the valley in 1178AGC. The new replacement buildings constructed during the post-destruction recovery were built to be much stronger. Many of these structures remain with few newer ones matching the robustness of their construction.

Note(s) from the Archivists:

I've had bread in that valley. All other kinds are bland and flat in comparison. - Archivist Theta   Have you ever thought about going back for a bit and getting some more? Perhaps enough for the rest of us? - Archivist Enna   Is that a hint? - Archivist Theta

This one is nice! I can so easily picture the locations. I'm now wondering how good that bread is!
