Corpse Remover

It ain't glorious work, but this is how you get your fields back.
— Tanston Faesgridibor, Corpse Remover

Overview

In times of war, a battlefield is littered with the corpses of dead soldiers. The ground is also stained with blood and all manner of broken armaments. The victorious soldiers get their pick of the best loot while poachers and other kinds of individuals pick over what is left. What most do not desire from the battlefield is a dead corpse. Enter the Corpse Remover, a person who will go through the gruesome job of removing corpses from the battlefield and either sending the corpses back to their families or other relatives, or to be buried nearby in a mass grave if identification is impossible. If a mass grave cannot be done due to a dangerous disease or some wild magic ailment loosed, then the bodies are piled up and burned. A guild was formed in order to secure contracts for cleaning up the battlefield. The pay is not too great however, for moving dead bodies is hardly seen as a glorious occupation.

Before the Removers

Before there was a profession, armies were generally tasked with removing corpses from the battlefield. If the dead were too numerous, then they would burn them if given enough time to do so. If time is short, then they would have to leave the dead to the elements. It is this last outcome that eventually motivated a group of people to offer their services to remove corpses from the battlefield for some coin. Eventually this turned into a somewhat large profession as it helped free up army resources and time allowing them to maneuver more quickly. The most profitable customer for the Corpse Remover is of course the Helian Army.

Future of the Removers

It goes without saying that this profession stands to be making quite a bit of coin when the war between the powers of the Kingdom of Helia and the Queendom of Lunaria is underway. Of course, Corpse Collectors will get some practice when Helia approaches the Frosthammer Wall of the Kingdom of Vhara. That siege promises to be the bloodiest conflict yet.

Illicit Services

Like all other professions, Corpse Removers can and do engage in illicit dealings.   Some sell some of the corpses to a shadowy organization, to a disavowed doctor, or a reclusive necromancer.

Note(s) from the Archivists:

This is one of the more morbid professions I've ever heard of, but I can see why it is needed. - Archivist Edward
