During the Lizard Extermination Campaign the Saurians made first contact with Walren vessels in the Caldara system. Neither recognized the other's ship designs nor understood their languages, and the Walren being Walren, they attacked the Saurian vessels. This instigated a war of many years before the misunderstanding could finally be worked out and rectified. It took many years for the Saurian to begin to trust the Walren empire.
