Daegavore Species in Avendora | World Anvil

Daegavore (Day-guh-vore)

Daegavores roam the vast deserts of Sauria (though less and less as more of the planet is covered in sprawling cities every year), hunting any living thing they smell. These massive creatures were considered for extermination when Saurians first colonized Sauria (then S’Car III), but were spared due to Emperor Aku Va’Kai’s desire to preserve the local fauna and flora.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Daegavores resemble massive centipedes, with a squished cylindrical shape sprouting myriad sharp limbs. They only use these likbs when traveling across or up rocky or other solid surfaces, instead traveling more like a snake on sand, slithering and undulating their bodies do produce surprising speed. They also use their wedge shaped heads to burrow into the sand, where the often lay in wait for their prey. Jointed overlapping chiton plates line the top and bottom of their bodies, not joining on the sides to allow their legs a greater range of motion. Lastly, their mouthes are lined with long, spine-like teeth that help to feed prey into their hungry gullets, which span nearly the whole length of the creature, doubling as their entire digestive tract, and are also lined 360 degrees with smaller razor sharp teeth that shred whatever is consumed into a pulp that is digested by excreted digestive acids within.

Genetics and Reproduction

Daegavore eggs gestate for years before finally hatching, thousands of even millions of extremely tiny (usually around 1”) babies hatching from a single egg. Sadly, only a very few reach adulthood.

Growth Rate & Stages

Growing between 1 and 6 inches every day, Daegavores seem to never stop growing.

Ecology and Habitats

These creatures thrive in extremely hot desert environments where they can burrow and wait to ambush their prey, but also prefer laying their eggs in caves or other rock formations.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Any living thing, humanoid, beast, or plant, is on the menu for these beasts. Interestingly, they can survive years without food by entering a sort of format hibernation while they lay in wait for prey to approach, though they much prefer to hunt for sustenance.
