Sand People

Decendants of the “First Peoples" who migrated to what would become the Si Wong Desert by the time of ATLA, these people are the few who stayed after what was once called the Great Oasis became the Great Desert thanks to 300 years of continual war over the region. Later, the Great Desert would come to be known as The Si Wong Desert, named after one of the great chieftains of the sand tribes, Si Wong.

The ancient cities and temples which have since been swallowed up by the sand of the Si Wong Desert once housed arguably the most powerful civilization on the mainland of the ATLA earth. However, with the Great Oasis of the desert gone, there are very few reasons to stay. So, most people moved out. A few people did stay however because of their spiritual connection to the land. These people became known as the sand tribes.
By the time of PotL, most sand tribes are made up of entirely sand benders thanks to their spiritual heritage. But, most of these sand benders have forgotten about the once great heritage of their people in the desert and therefore have forgotten their spiritual history as it relates to their land. As such, most sand tribes continue to live in the desert and practice their “traditions” simply for the sake of it. This makes them very stagnant in their societal, technological, and overall progress as a people. They pretty much have no hope or vision for the future. This has also made some tribes lose their kinship and loyalty to one another…
