Player Mechanics

Welcome to the nitty gritty of the Avaleen system. In this article, I have gathered the new options for character creation available to players and GMs who want to create a campaign or a story in Avaleen.

Bear in mind that I am a D&D nerd, but also a newb and this is the first time I have tried to homebrew anything. There are overpowered features and gaps probably everywhere - but only trial and play-testing will figure those out. If you have any feedback I would love to hear it!

Backgrounds

While writing the Oliria Chronicles I realized that the fifth edition backgrounds didn't quite cover everything I needed or wanted for my characters, while still keeping them in line with the D&D 5e ruleset. Therefore I have created a couple of new options for backgrounds that relates to the specific cultures and races in my world.

Akati (background)

Most akati alive now remember the days before the last Sundering, when they were still living in the Feywild. They are a proud race, ancient and magically adept. You are born into a society that believes it has a right to the world and as such you want for very little. All akati are divided into five tribes - whether by birth or choice. Choose your variant below.

Variant: Aadam

The Aadam are the keepers of time and reality, tasked with studying and preserving the arcane weaves that govern the flow of existence. Raised by lore keepers, temple guardians, and oracles, you have grown up surrounded by deep knowledge of the past, present, and future. Your people understand that time is fluid, intertwined with fate, and intricately connected to the very fabric of the universe. As a member of the Aadam tribe, you are attuned to these rhythms, knowing that the past, present, and future are not separate but bound together in an ever-shifting cycle.

Your people are deeply spiritual and philosophical, often seen as the sages of Akati society, with their teachings influencing all who seek to understand the world’s deeper truths. Whether you seek to correct the flow of time, protect the ancient secrets of your people, or unlock the mysteries of existence, your background has provided you with the tools to achieve these goals. But, with such power comes great responsibility. You are always conscious of the dangers and temptations that meddling with time can bring, and you tread carefully, aware that each moment holds the potential to reshape the future.

Chronomancer’s Insight. You have spent your life studying the intricate web of time. You gain the ability to cast Detect Magic at will. When you cast this spell, you can learn the school of magic that is most strongly present around you, especially when it pertains to time magic or temporal anomalies.

Temporal Knowledge. You have a deep understanding of historical events and the flow of time. You can add your proficiency bonus to any Intelligence (Investigation) checks related to deciphering ancient texts, studying artifacts, or identifying magical phenomena that deal with time manipulation.

Time’s Embrace. Growing up under the watchful eyes of timekeepers and oracles, you can sense the natural ebb and flow of time around you. You can cast Comprehend Languages once per long rest without expending a spell slot. Additionally, you can cast Augury once per day, using your Wisdom modifier.

Future Sight. Beginning at 3rd level, you can tap into the currents of time to gain glimpses of possible outcomes. Once per long rest, you can gain advantage on one attack roll, saving throw, or ability check. You must choose to use this feature before the roll is made.

Time's Guardianship. At 5th level, you learn to manipulate the flow of time more directly. You can cast Counterspell once per long rest without expending a spell slot. Alternatively, you can cast Time Stop once per long rest, but the duration is limited to 1 round.

Variant: Ignis

The Ignis tribe is the oldest and most revered among the akati. Formed in the first sacred grove and named after the god who blessed them, Ignis, the tribe is known for its deep connection to the divine and the primal forces that shape the world. With bloodlines that stretch back millennia, members of the Ignis tribe are often seen as the torchbearers of their people’s ancient traditions, the keepers of sacred wisdom, and the protectors of Akati’s legacy. You, as a member of this esteemed tribe, carry the weight of this legacy, aware of the responsibility placed upon you by both your heritage and the expectations of others. Whether you serve as a protector, a diplomat, or a scholar, you have been raised with the knowledge that the past, present, and future of the akati are linked through your tribe’s ancient bloodline.

While this heritage brings great honor, it also places an immense burden upon your shoulders. You are constantly reminded of the responsibility you bear to carry the legacy of your ancestors, and the expectations others place upon you can sometimes feel overwhelming. Yet, despite the weight of these duties, the Ignis tribe instills in you a sense of pride and resilience, for you know that your actions, your choices, and your life are intrinsically tied to the fate of your people.

Divine Bloodline. The blood of Ignis flows strongly within you. You have advantage on saving throws against air and earth-based damage or effects. Additionally, you gain resistance to being knocked prone.

Ancestor’s Legacy. You have inherited the wisdom and strength of your tribe’s ancient ancestors. Beginning at 3rd level, you have proficiency in History and Religion. Your deep understanding of the lore of your people grants you the ability to discern the true meaning of ancient texts, understand the rituals of your people, and recognize the significance of sacred sites and symbols.

Earth-Bound Will. You possess a deep inner strength that ties you to the ground of your people’s origin as you reach 5th level. Once per long rest, you can use your bonus action to empower yourself, gaining temporary hit points equal to your level + your Constitution modifier. These temporary hit points last for 1 hour.

Variant: Mora

The Mora tribe are the fierce protectors of their people and empire. Known for their superior strength, resilience, and unyielding spirit, the Mora have always been at the forefront of battle and defense. Whether on land, in the sky, or at sea, the Mora are the warriors who ensure the safety and stability of their civilization. You, as a member of this proud and powerful tribe, are steeped in the traditions of combat, honor, and duty, and your very blood runs with the strength of your ancestors, warriors of legend.

The Mora tribe places a great emphasis on protection. Whether it is protecting sacred grounds, guarding valuable assets, or defending the Akati Empire against external threats, the Mora are the first to stand between danger and the vulnerable. From a young age, you were taught the art of combat, martial discipline, and strategic defense, and you have honed your body and mind to become a true warrior of your people.

Superior Endurance. The Mora are known for their physical endurance and resilience in battle. You have advantage on saving throws against exhaustion and have resistance to poison damage.

Protective Instinct. The Mora are naturally protective of those they care for. You gain the Protection fighting style (when a creature you can see attacks a target other than you within 5 feet of you, you can use your reaction to impose disadvantage on the attack roll).

Warrior’s Might. You have been trained in the ways of battle since childhood. When you reach 5th level, once per long rest, you can use your bonus action to enter a state of ***Warrior's Fury***, where your melee attacks deal an extra 1d6 damage for 1 minute. After this duration, you suffer disadvantage on all Strength-based attack rolls until you complete a short or long rest.

Variant: Triyes

The Triyes tribe is one of the most respected in the Empire. Growing up in the Triyes, you were surrounded by thinkers, inventors, and magicians - people who prioritize knowledge above all else. From a young age, you were encouraged to question everything and seek the deeper meaning behind the world around you. While some may view your tribe's commitment to intellectual endeavors as detached or aloof, there is no denying the vast influence the Triyes have had on the Akati Empire and the world at large.

As a member of the Triyes, your impact on the advancement of knowledge is undeniable, whether in the field of arcane research, magical innovations, or the application of science to solve the most pressing issues of the day. Your tribe's dedication to research and advancement, however, comes with a price. The relentless pursuit of knowledge can lead to ideological divides and disagreements within the tribe, and not all of your fellow Triyes share the same vision for the future. Despite these differences, the Triyes remain united in their shared values and their collective responsibility to push the boundaries of knowledge.

Scholarly Insight. Growing up in the heart of research and academic thought, you have developed an advanced understanding of a wide range of subjects. At 3rd level, you can add your proficiency bonus to any Intelligence or Wisdom check related to uncovering or interpreting knowledge. This includes deciphering ancient texts, investigating magical phenomena, and solving complex problems.

Theoretical Mastery. Your deep understanding of theory allows you to analyze and manipulate magic and scientific principles. At 3rd level, you gain proficiency in one additional tool or language of your choice. Additionally, when you take a short or long rest, you can spend time reflecting on the deeper workings of the world, gaining advantage on your next Intelligence or Wisdom saving throw.

Arcane Proficiency. The Triyes are well-versed in both practical and arcane matters. You gain proficiency in one type of magical focus (e.g., arcane focus, crystal, orb) or an additional spellcasting class feature if you are a spellcaster. If you already possess spellcasting abilities, you may choose to gain a 1st-level spell from the wizard spell list.

Analytical Precision. Your sharp mind allows you to pick up on fine details others might miss. Beginning at 5th level, as a bonus action, you can study a creature or object within 30 feet of you, gaining a brief insight into its weaknesses or hidden qualities. This insight grants advantage on your next attack roll, skill check, or saving throw against that creature or object.

Variant: Roya

The Roya are the most nomadic tribe of the Akati, and those who took the displacement in their stride after Agartha came crashing into the material plane. Known for their adventurous spirit and restless nature, the Roya live for exploration and discovery. They roam the lands of Avaleen, seeking out new corners of the world, uncovering lost knowledge, and immersing themselves in the ever-changing tapestry of life. Their desire for adventure often leads them to wander, but always with a purpose: to protect sacred paths between the Material Plane and the Faerie Realm, and to gather ancient secrets that have been lost to time. Including those of Ghor Minthra.

You grew up surrounded by the wisdom of the past and the thrill of discovering something new. The Roya believes that true understanding comes not from sitting still, but from exploring, experiencing, and learning from the world itself. Their deep connection to the realms grants them an otherworldly bond to nature and magic, and their restless, nomadic lifestyle reflects this ever-present drive to explore both the physical world and the mysteries that lie beyond. Though not tied to any one place, the Roya take great pride in their role as guardians of the Portal system. While their wanderlust drives them to explore far and wide, they never stray too far from their duty to protect these ancient, sacred sites.

Nomadic Spirit. You have adapted to a life of constant travel. You gain the ability to travel through difficult terrain at normal speed without suffering exhaustion. Additionally, you can choose one of the following skills to gain proficiency in: Animal Handling, Athletics, or Stealth.

Adventurous Wanderlust. Restlessness flows through your veins, and the thrill of exploration keeps you moving. You can add your proficiency bonus to any check related to navigating unknown or unexplored territories, including finding hidden paths, secret libraries, and ancient ruins. Your insatiable curiosity also grants you proficiency in Investigation, alternatively expert if you are already proficient.

Faerie Connection. You have a deep connection to the Faerie Realm, and the magic of that realm flows through your veins. At 3rd level, as an action, you can cast Misty Step once per long rest without expending a spell slot. Additionally, you have advantage on saving throws against being charmed or frightened.

Pathfinder’s Instincts. Growing up you developed a keen sense of direction and an instinct for finding your way through unfamiliar terrain. Beginning at 5th level you cannot become lost except by magical means, and you can navigate through natural environments without a map or compass. If you are on a road or well-trodden path, you can always find the correct direction.

Portal Guardians. You were trained to protect the portals that link Faerie to the Material Plane, and many other places together. From 7th level and onwards, whenever you take a long rest in an area near one of these portals, you can sense disturbances in the magical flow, such as creatures attempting to cross between realms without permission or the fabric of reality weakening. You can use this feature to locate nearby planar anomalies or fey creatures in hiding.

Variant: Tribeless

Not all akati fit neatly into the established tribes of their people. Some have rejected the rigid traditions of the tribes, others have been cast out due to personal failings or disagreements, some forced to leave for reasons both personal and political, while some wander for reasons beyond the comprehension of their kin. Whether you left to pursue knowledge, gain freedom from the constraints of tribal expectations, or were exiled due to an act of defiance or dishonor, you now live on the fringes of Akati society. The lack of belonging to a specific tribe has made your path difficult, but also one of freedom. You are unbound by tradition and expectation, and you can follow your own whims and desires. However, your estrangement from your people means that many of the resources, allies, and support that members of the tribes receive are unavailable to you. Your existence as an outcast is in many ways a lonely one, as many see your lack of a tribe as a mark of dishonor and therefore a source of suspicion.

Outcast’s Independence. You have gained a certain resilience from your status as an outcast. You gain proficiency in Survival and Stealth, allowing you to navigate both the physical and social challenges of being an outsider. Additionally, you gain proficiency with one artisan’s tools or gaming set of your choice, reflecting the fact that you may have learned a trade or skill as a means of survival.

Unbound by Tradition. You do not follow the customs or expectations of any particular tribe, and this gives you the flexibility to adopt a wide variety of philosophies, skills, and worldviews. You can choose an additional language and tool proficiency of your choice, representing the breadth of experiences and skills you’ve gained outside the rigid structure of tribal society.

Tribal Outlaw. Your time outside of the tribal structure has made you a master of avoiding detection and confrontation. You can use your bonus action to take the Dodge action, and you gain advantage on Wisdom (Perception) checks made to detect hidden creatures or objects, as you’ve learned to notice when something is out of place.

Ties That Bind. Even as an Outcast, your past with the Akati tribes is a part of you. You may not have the full support of any tribe, but you still share blood with them. When interacting with a tribe member, you have advantage on Charisma (Persuasion) checks to gain favor, even if the tribes view you with disdain. They may be reluctant to offer help, but your shared heritage is undeniable.

Tribeless - A Stranger You Know

You may not belong to a tribe, but your heritage still connects you to the akati people. You can find acceptance among fellow Outcasts or sympathetic individuals from your homeland, but your place in society is precarious. Many view your absence from the tribe as a sign of weakness, dishonor, or failure. You have a deep understanding of the complex politics and cultural divisions within the Akati Empire, which allows you to navigate social interactions with an awareness of the delicate dynamics at play. However, your relationships with other akati are fraught with tension and suspicion.

The advantage of belonging to no one tribe may also be your greatest disadvantage, as you have no one to call on for help when things go wrong. Living on the fringes of society has made you resourceful and adaptable, but you’ve also learned how to survive through wit, charm, and sheer willpower.

Wandering Spirit. Without the boundaries of tribal obligations, you are free to roam as you please. Whether as a dissenter, a criminal, or an exile, you might find that certain factions view you with suspicion or distrust. You gain proficiency in Deception and Intimidation, allowing you to mask your identity or coerce others into offering information or assistance when necessary.

Ability Score Increase. Your Charisma score increases by 2, and your Constitution score increases by 1.

Suggested Characteristics

Aadam individuals are often deep thinkers, philosophical in nature, and speak with a wisdom that transcends the present moment. They are attuned to the flow of time, always considering the long-term consequences of their actions. Those who come from the Aadam tribe may be drawn to the preservation of knowledge, guarding the past, or safeguarding the future.

Members of the Ignis tribe are proud, strong-willed, and deeply connected to their ancestry. They are guided by a sense of duty to protect their people and their sacred traditions, and they are often seen as the leaders and defenders of the akati. While their spirit can lead them to act decisively, their commitment to the tribe’s honor and the teachings of their ancestors is unwavering.

Roya individuals are restless, curious, and full of wanderlust. They are always eager to see what lies beyond the next horizon and are deeply connected to both the physical world and the mystical forces of other planes. Driven by a desire for exploration, discovery, and understanding, they make natural scholars, adventurers, and guardians. However, their restless nature can make it difficult to settle down, and they may struggle with long-term commitments or staying in one place for too long.

Members of the Triyes tribe are studious, contemplative, and deeply invested in the pursuit of knowledge. They are often seen as the philosophers, scientists, and researchers of the akati, shaping the future through their intellectual endeavors. Triyes individuals are usually calm, patient, and methodical, though their obsession with knowledge can sometimes make them seem detached or aloof from the concerns of the common folk. While some may become embroiled in heated debates over the ethics of their discoveries or the direction of their research, all Triyes are united by their shared devotion to learning and understanding.

Tribeless are shaped by the struggles of surviving without the protection or structure of the Akati tribes. They are often independent, pragmatic, and resourceful. Some long for the sense of community they left behind, while others embrace their outsider status and seek to forge a new path.

Illevan (Background)

You carry the blood of an ancient race in your veins. And one that lost its home to the Sundering. The ruins of Japhaia, the Jewel of Illeva still stand in the wasteland by Ghor Minthra and it is a sore on your mind. You are born into a displaced people trying to survive.

Variant: High Illevan

The High Illevan are a very ancient offshoot of the broader Illevan race, imbued with even greater influence from the Shadowfell, and those deep, primal forces that govern time and death in the Shadow realm.

Their ancestors were shaped by the primordial forces of death, time, and fate, and their bloodline carries the weight of both the divine influence of Ithe, Goddess of Death and Winter, and Ancev, God of Crossroads and Time. These ancient connections imbue the High Illevan with power over the flow of time, fate, and death, making them deeply attuned to the cycles of life and death.

Whether born into noble families, secretive orders, or wandering the realms as agents of fate, the High Illevan rarely announces themselves as such. Especially since the assassination of the last King of Japhaia. In myth and stories, they are often portrayed as enigmatic figures, wise but distant, guardians of ancient secrets, and wielders of forgotten power. They are a variant of Illevans out of sync with the mortal realms in subtle ways.

Variant: Engineer

The Illevan Engineers are shadow elves whose ancestry is tied to the ancient, shadowy realms of the Shadowfell, but whose talents have been honed through centuries of crafting and understanding the intricate balance between magic and mechanics. Deeply attuned to the energies of the Shadowfell, the Illevan Arcane Supreme Engineers have long used their connection to the arcane and the shadowy powers that permeate their homeland to build wonders that combine the supernatural and the mechanical.

These engineers are inventors, creators, and innovators, melding the old-world mastery of ancient arcane knowledge with cutting-edge magical technology. Driven by a desire to push the boundaries of magic, artifice, and technology, they create devices of great power—often inspired by the destructive and transformative forces of the Shadowfell, the Hells, and Abyssal planes. Whether they're crafting enchanted constructs, magical weapons, or arcane machinery, these Illevans are adept at working with the arcane energies that flow through the material world.

They are the original creators of the Portals when their kinship with the akati was still one of peace and mutual curiosity.

Variant: Insurrectionist

The Illevan Insurrectionists are a faction of the Illevan people who have turned their backs on the quiet, shadowy existence that defined their ancient heritage in the Shadowfell. These rebels have embraced a more active role in the ongoing Shadow War, disregarding the Accords struck at the time of the Sundering. They have chosen to fight for the survival and supremacy of their people, seeking to avenge ancient wrongs, destroy the Akati, and ensure that the Illevan bloodline remains dominant and respected in the mortal world.

These Illevan rebels are often shadowy spies, deadly assassins, or master tacticians, trained in the dark arts and equipped with the power of time and shadow. They use their unique connection to fate, shadow magic, and arcane technology to undermine their enemies. By infiltrating Akati strongholds, disrupting their supply lines, and sabotaging their magical defenses, the Illevan Insurrectionists fight for revenge, revolution, and the future of their race.

Crossroads of Fate. Your unique connection to the forces of fate, time, and death grants you a mysterious ability to sense key moments in history, the lives of others, and the flow of time. You may experience visions, dreams, or cryptic messages that guide your decisions or forewarn of events to come. These glimpses are subtle, often appearing as fleeting impressions or riddles that may be difficult to interpret, but they provide clarity when you need it most. Divine Guidance. The answer might not be immediately clear, but will always reveal something that aids your journey. Timekeeper's Insight. You are attuned to the ebb and flow of time. You can sense when something is "out of sync" with the natural order, such as disruptions in time, unnatural distortions, or places of great historical significance. This doesn't necessarily provide immediate answers but gives you insight into the importance of certain places or moments. Gift of the Shadowfell. Through years of research and practice, you have learned to infuse arcane energy into your creations, bringing them to life or making them far more potent than mundane devices. Infusion of Arcane Power: Once per long rest, you may infuse a magical item, piece of machinery, or mechanical construct with arcane energy. This infusion can grant the item a temporary magical enhancement for 1 hour. The infusion might result in an enhancement such as: A weapon or tool grants a +1 bonus to attack rolls or abilities related to its function. A mechanical device (such as a clockwork familiar or magic item) gains temporary extra hit points or an added magical effect (such as resistance to a specific damage type or the ability to cast a minor spell) Innate Arcane Craftsmanship: Growing up in a society where magic and mechanics were intertwined, you’ve been trained in creating intricate, powerful devices. You gain proficiency in Tinker’s Tools and can craft or repair basic magical items and mechanical devices. You can also craft items that require both arcane knowledge and crafting skills, such as magical traps, scrolls, or minor magic items. In addition, you can use your proficiency with Tinker’s Tools to craft magical ammunition (such as arrows or bolts) that deal arcane damage when fired. You also gain the Mending cantrip.

Your experience with the Insurrection has made you an expert in guerrilla warfare, espionage, and psychological tactics. Infiltration Expertise: You are particularly skilled at infiltrating enemy territory, evading detection, and sabotaging their operations. You gain advantage on Stealth and Sleight of Hand checks when attempting to sneak into an Akati stronghold, avoid detection, or plant covert items (like explosives, magical traps, or propaganda). When planning an attack, organizing a defense, or negotiating alliances, you can draw on your understanding of both the Shadowfell and the Feywild to gain an upper hand. You gain advantage on Intelligence (Investigation) checks related to military tactics, as well as Insight checks to determine weaknesses in an enemy's strategy. High Illevan: Those who know who and what they are driven by the will of their deities to oversee the crossroads of fate, acting often as guardians or watchers over places where time flows differently or where death and renewal must take place. They are chroniclers of history as well as rebuilders of their ruined home. They carry their burden with grace and determination and often find themselves at odds with the Akati of the same affliction. However some want to form alliances where only conflict has reigned.

Engineer: Illevan Arcane Engineers are curious, inventive, and driven by a need to understand the complex relationship between magic and mechanics. They often seek to expand their knowledge and break the boundaries of what is possible, experimenting with new technologies, discovering ancient arcane secrets, and constantly pushing themselves to innovate. Sometimes they end up in the service of those on the wrong side of society though.

Insurrectionist: Illevan Insurrectionists are deeply driven by their desire to win the Shadow War and bring an end to the tyranny of the Akati. They are loyal to their people but often ruthless in their pursuit of victory, seeing the Akati as ancient enemies who must be eradicated to ensure the survival of the Illevan race. The Insurrectionist lives by the creed of revenge, revolution, and sacrifice.

Monster (Background)

Where others see a humanoid shape, they see a lie. That is not what you are. A dragon permanently polymorphed, a cured lycanthrope, a vampire brought back from the peace of death. Or some other monster who has had their form changed into a common humanoid race. You once spent years of your life as a being that haunts the nightmares of many. What were you? What terrible deeds did you commit? What magic transformed you?   Learning to live as something else is a struggle, a pain you committed to. Memories, old enemies, lost friends and family from your past life haunt you but your mind has committed to the new form. The new culture with its new laws and customs.   The restless way of adventure is the only one that feels right for you. A person who walks between two worlds. But on the road, you can both nourish your new heart and unleash the savagery of what you once were.

Variant: Magical Weapon

Though your violent memories are similar to those who were once monsters, your circumstances are even more bizarre. Legendary figures once wielded you to slay countless others. Now, transformed by magic, you are humanoid yourself. Who were your previous wielders? Villains? Heroes? Were you abandoned in a barn? Your creator? For the first time in all of your time you are in control of your actions and this new independence is strange but exciting!

Skill Proficiencies Intimidation, Survival
Languages Choose two, one of which is the native language of your form
Equipment Set of common clothes, a small book with sketches of monsters, 10 ft iron chain, a pouch containing 5gp
Lifestyle Hermit (starting lifestyle)

Features

A Little Off. Most people find you a little odd and you have a reputation of being weird, but generally harmless. It is almost like you are a new person in a new skin, but those around you brush that off as a quirk. Therefore you get away with unusual behaviour others might not. And when you do something taboo, or dangerous, but not intentionally illegal people tend to ignore you.
Old Friend: If your previous monster form was intelligent and capable of communicating, you could pick this variant feature instead of A Little Off. You have a monstrous friend of the same species you once were. This monster is able to trade secret messages with you through a system you devised together, letting you get inside information you would not otherwise have been privy to.

Omored Pirate (Background)

You are a child of the Morimyr Ocean, born to its vastness, storms, and hidden wonders. Whether you grew up among the Varu, the ocean’s enigmatic islands with their thriving, diverse cultures, or aboard a wandering ship that called no port home, the sea is in your blood. You know its moods, its dangers, and its beauty, and you’ve learned to navigate the balance between its gifts and its perils.

This background offers two distinct variants: the Buccaneer, a daring sailor who lives for the thrill of the high seas, and the Janobin Cleric, a devoted follower of a sea religion inspired by the freedom and spirit of birds.

Variant: Buccaneer

You thrive on the thrill of open water and the freedom of the sea. Whether you’re a privateer, a pirate, or simply a daring mariner, you’re most at home on the deck of a ship. Replace Born of the Waves with Sea Raider’s Grit, which allows you to spot ships or other watercraft at twice the normal range and grants advantage on Charisma checks to influence sailors.

Variant: Janobin Cleric

You follow the teachings of Janobin, the avian deity of freedom, clarity, and the sky above the waves. You often wear birdlike adornments and treat feathers as sacred symbols. Replace Born of the Waves with Skyward Devotion, granting you the ability to sense the direction of the wind at all times and advantage on Wisdom (Insight) checks to discern deception or dishonesty.

Skill Proficiencies Choose two from Athletics, Perception, Survival, or Nature.
Tool Proficiencies Navigator’s tools or vehicles (water).
Languages One language of your choice (often the tongue of a distant port, an island dialect, or the melodic chants of seafolk).
Equipment

  • A weathered set of traveler’s clothes designed for the ocean’s climate.
  • A keepsake from your oceanic home, such as a carved seashell, a feather amulet, or a scrap of sailcloth.
  • A small trinket from a distant place (roll on the Trinkets table for inspiration).
  • A pouch containing 15 gp.

Features

Born of the Waves.

You instinctively understand the rhythms of the sea and the signs it provides. You can always recall the general direction of true north, predict basic weather patterns for the next 24 hours, and locate nearby sources of fresh water when near the coast. You also know how to operate small watercraft and can navigate by the stars when visible.

If your adventures take you far from the ocean, you remain attuned to the natural world, able to adapt your skills to similar survival tasks in other terrains.

Suggested Characteristics

Morimyr Voyagers are shaped by their time at sea, and their traits reflect the freedom and unpredictability of the ocean.

Moon Colonist

Born and raised on a desolate, resource-stripped moon, you’ve known hardship, ingenuity, and resilience from your earliest days. The moon is your cradle and your prison, its rocky surface scarred by the relentless pursuit of resources. Life among the mining pits, malfunctioning terraforming rigs, and soot-filled corridors of makeshift settlements has shaped you into a resourceful and unyielding survivor. Whether your life revolved around the constant grind of mining, the upkeep of creaking machinery, or organizing against distant rulers who exploit your home, you carry the spirit of the moon colonists: tough, clever, and fiercely independent.   Community is everything when survival is at stake, but desperation can bring out cruelty and greed. Now, whether by choice or necessity, you’ve left the moon behind, but its lessons—and scars—remain with you.

Skill Proficiencies Choose two from Athletics, Survival, Investigation, or Persuasion.
Tool Proficiencies One type of artisan's tools (typically Tinker’s Tools, Smith’s Tools, or Alchemist’s Supplies).
Languages Choose two, one of which is common
Equipment
  • A set of durable, patched clothing that has seen better days.
  • A well-worn tool of your trade (a small hammer, a wrench, or a coal-stained alchemical vial).
  • A keepsake from a loved one (a locket, a handmade charm, or a scrimshaw trinket).
  • A pouch containing 10 gp worth of salvaged parts or materials.

Features

Grim Resourcefulness Growing up in an environment where survival depended on creativity and grit, you can make do with what you have. When crafting or repairing items, you can use scraps and substitute materials to achieve similar results. Given time and access to a few basic resources, you can cobble together rudimentary versions of tools, simple weapons, or even mechanisms (such as tripwires or pulleys). Additionally, you know how to find or create shelter in hostile environments, particularly urban ruins, abandoned facilities, or underground areas.
