Sorcerer - Lunarchild, Oraclechild

Sorcerer

You are a spellcaster to whom magic comes as naturally as breathing. For it is a part of you, it is in you veins, the very fabric and essence of your being. When your sorcerer character chooses a sorcerous origin at 1st level, the Lunarchild and the Oraclechild are two new options available in an Avaleen campaign.

The mysterious weave and arcane flow of magic are feared by many folks in Avaleen who do not understand this power that can sometimes be dangerous and unpredictable. But while some spellcasters must study the essence and nature of magic in the hope of learning to harness it, sorcerers possess an innate talent to sculpt the power to their liking.

Lunarchild

The Lunarchild is a sorcerer born under the ever-changing glow of Luna. A reflection of the unpredictability and raw, primal chaos of the celestial body itself. Their power fluctuates wildly with the lunar phases, and it is entirely subject to the moods of the moon—sometimes radiant and full of light, other times dark and twisted. The Lunarchild’s magic is less about control and more about embracing chaos, twisting and warping the fabric of reality. Their magic reflects the moon's phases in ways that completely break the standard norms of sorcery.

A Lunarchild Sorcerer therefore is a being of mystery, their soul entwined with the chaotic and silvery essence of moonlight. Their hair may shimmer like moonbeams, shifting between hues of pale white, silver, and lavender, while their eyes may glow faintly with an otherworldly light. Born under an unusual lunar event, their connection to Luna infuses them with wild, unpredictable magic, often manifesting in bursts of silvery light, shadowy illusions, or gravitational distortions.

The Lunarchild’s magic is a dance of contradictions—gentle luminescence that soothes or a sudden lunar flare that sears, creating a duality as captivating as the moon itself. They are guided by whimsy and intuition, their actions influenced by shifting emotions and the moon's phases. This sorcerer thrives in uncertainty, bending reality with erratic, moonlit power, a harbinger of beauty and chaos in equal measure.

Selivara Nyxshade (Elven Lunarchild Sorcerer)   The Moon Child was no stranger to the looks others threw them when they walked past. Their presence subtly affecting the world around them. Pools of water rippling at their approach, faint moonlit glows following them in darkness. Their long, flowing hair shimmered like starlit night skies, shifting between hues of silver, violet, and deep blue. But it was their eyes that caught attention. Mesmerizing, and ever-shifting between luminous white and black, like eclipses captured in motion. Their lineage whispers of a cosmic event where the boundaries between the Material Plane and the Astral Sea blurred, and some suspect their ancestor was a lunar deity or celestial wanderer. Whether true or not, Selivara walks on, robes flowing behind her like a mirror of the night.

Lunar Affinity

At 1st level, the Lunarchild's power is inherently chaotic and unpredictable because the moon governs the tides of magic and the natural world and your magic directly fluctuates with these tides. Each day the Lunarchild rolls on the Lunar Chaos Table to determine how their magic will behave. This means the Lunarchild has no consistent control over their spells, instead relying on the moon's whim to determine the outcome. Roll a d6 at the end of a long rest to determine that day's magical chaos.

Moon's Flux

At 6th level, the Lunarchild gains the ability to temporarily swap their magic with a different phase of the moon.
  • Shifting Phases: As a bonus action, once per long rest, you can invoke the changing phases of the moon, swapping the nature of your magic for 1 minute. When you use this feature, roll on the Lunar Chaos Table (or choose a phase if the moon guides you) to determine what happens to your spells.
While using this ability and under its effects, whenever you cast a spell, roll a d6. The result affects the spell you have just cast, in addition to the effect of the lunar phase.

Lunar Reflections

Also at 6th level, the Lunarchild becomes capable of reflecting the emotions and intentions of others back onto them. You gain the following abilities:
  • Mirror of the Soul: As a reaction to being targeted by a harmful spell or attack, you can reflect the magic or force of the attack back onto the caster or attacker. This causes the enemy to make the same saving throw (if applicable) that you would have made. If the enemy fails, they take the same damage or effect they would have caused you. This can be used once per short rest.
  • Emotional Surge: As an action, you can choose a creature within 30 feet and force them to experience an overwhelming surge of emotion. The creature must make a Charisma saving throw or be frightened or charmed (your choice) for 1 minute. They can repeat the saving throw at the end of each of their turns to break free. Once you use this feature, you cannot use it again until you complete a long rest.

Moonstruck Fury

Upon reaching 14th level, the Lunarchild gains the ability to embrace the most chaotic power of the moon. You gain the following abilities:
  • Fury of the Moon: As an action, once per long rest, you can unleash the moon's chaotic energy in a 30-foot radius centered on yourself. Each creature in the area must make a Wisdom saving throw or be affected by a random magical effect from the Lunar Chaos Table.
  • Eclipsing Burst: Once per long rest, you can release an explosive burst of lunar energy. As an action, you can force all creatures within 30 feet of you to make a Constitution saving throw or take 6d6 radiant damage and be blinded for 1 minute. A creature that succeeds on the saving throw takes half damage and is not blinded.
  • Darkening Presence: Your connection to the dark side of the moon strengthens. As a bonus action, you can emanate an aura of Necrotic Energy for 1 minute. Creatures that start their turn within 10 feet of you take necrotic damage equal to your Sorcerer level, and you regain hit points equal to the amount of necrotic damage dealt. You can use this feature once per long rest.
  • Tidal Chaos: After you cast a spell, roll a d6. On a 1-3 the spell causes a secondary effect of the DM's choice. On a 4-6 there is a magical backlash where the Lunarchild takes damage equal to half the spell's level.

Lunar Ascendancy

Starting at 18th level, the Lunarchild can spend 5 sorcery points to ascend into the true power of the moon's chaos for 10 minutes. Their magic becomes unpredictably divine, warping space and time with every spell they cast. Their control over the moon is at its peak, but so is the moon's chaotic influence over them. You gain the following abilities and effects in your ascended form:
  • Lunar Aura: You are surrounded by an aura of moonlight. All creatures within 10 feet of you must make a Wisdom saving throw or be frightened. You also gain resistance to necrotic, radiant, and force damage.
  • Lunar Overflow: Once per long rest, when you cast a spell, you unleash a Lunar Overflow, causing a ripple in the fabric of reality. For 1 minute, all spells you cast are wildly amplified: Any time you cast a spell that deals damage, you can choose to deal an additional 2d6 radiant damage or 2d6 necrotic damage (your choice) to one target. Once this minute ends, the Lunarchild takes 1d6 force damage for each spell cast during this time, as the chaotic power takes its toll on their body.
  • Lunar Reckoning: Once every long rest you can invoke this ability as a bonus action during the duration of your ascended form. The moon's chaotic energy erupts in a 15-foot radius centered on you. Every creature in the area must make a Charisma saving throw, or take 4d10 radiant or necrotic damage (your choice), and you can choose to force one creature to make a Wisdom saving throw to avoid becoming paralyzed for 1 minute. If they succeed, they suffer disadvantage on their next attack roll or saving throw.

Moon's Favor

Also at 18th level, you gain the Moon's Favor. At the start of each of your turns, you gain a bonus equal to your Sorcerer level to one ability score (Strength, Dexterity, Constitution, Intelligence, Wisdom, or Charisma), chosen each turn. This reflects the ever-changing pull of the moon, allowing you to adapt and react to the ebb and flow of the celestial forces.

Oraclechild

You were born with the blood of fate itself running through your veins. Whether you were marked by a divine being, touched by the forces of prophecy, or the result of some celestial convergence, your connection to fate grants you extraordinary abilities. Your magic is not just about power, it is about understanding, manipulation, and sometimes defying the future itself which is not looked on kindly by some divine forces.   The Oraclechild is a sorcerer whose magic is not merely about casting spells, but also about glimpsing the threads of fate, interpreting omens, and manipulating the paths of destiny. While their power is not entirely under their own control, they hold great potential for shaping events. Fate, destiny, prophecy. These are the forces that define the Oraclechild's magic. The Oraclechild may not understand their full potential, but their connection to the forces of destiny allows them to influence reality in unpredictable and sometimes awe-inspiring ways. They are often sought after for their visions and prophecies, but their powers also come at a cost—their visions often bring both insight and madness.
Thalric Stone (Half-orc Oraclechild Sorcerer)   Thalric’s life began in obscurity as the child of a human scholar and an orc chieftain. His unusual birth under a rare celestial alignment marked him as special, but it also made him a target of fear and superstition. The people of his village exiled him when his powers began to manifest in unsettling ways—foretelling tragedies that came true no matter how hard people tried to avoid them. Wandering the world, Thalric sought solace in forgotten libraries, ancient ruins, and the company of wise hermits. Over time, he learned to interpret his visions and embrace his role as a weaver of destiny. Now, he roams the land as an enigmatic guide and seer, aiding those who cross his path while wrestling with the weight of the futures he glimpses but cannot always prevent.

Prophetic Insight

At 1st level, the Oraclechild gains the ability to peer into the currents of fate. They can sense subtle shifts in reality, gaining glimpses of the future that help them anticipate events and threats.   Fateful Vision: Once per long rest, you can enter a state of deep meditation or focus as a bonus action to glimpse the future. For the next 10 minutes, you gain the following benefits.
  • Advantage on the next attack roll, saving throw, or ability check until the end of your next turn.
  • You can spend a spell slot (1st level or higher) to ask the DM one specific yes/no question about the near future, and the DM will answer truthfully, though the answer may be vague or cryptic.
  • For the duration, whenever you cast a sorcerer spell that requires a saving throw, you can use your reaction to impose disadvantage on the creature's saving throw. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of once).

Threads of Fate

At 1st level, the Oraclechild learns to subtly cause minor distortions in reality. You may expend 1 sorcery point to re-roll any failed saving throw made by a creature within 30 feet of you that is a target of one of your spells. But you must declare this before the DM announces the result of the roll.   The Oraclechild has a deep, intuitive understanding of the forces of destiny, which allows them to subtly influence events and outcomes in their favor. But sometimes one has to take a risk, that may or may not pan out.

Prophetic Echoes

At 6th level, the Oraclechild gains the ability to invoke brief glimpses of alternate futures, using these visions to guide their decisions and actions.
  • Momentary Foresight: As a bonus action, you can spend 2 sorcery points to give yourself or a creature you see within 30 feet advantage on one attack roll, saving throw or ability check within the next minute. You can use your reaction to grant them advantage or disadvantage. You may use this feature once per long rest, and must declare it before the roll is made.
  • Echo of Prophecy: When you cast a spell of 1st level or higher, you can spend 1 sorcery point to cause the spell’s effect to repeat at the end of the following round. For example, a Fireball spell would explode a second time at the end of the next round, with the same damage and range as the original cast. The repeated effect doesn’t require concentration and cannot stack with other effects.
The Oraclechild’s power grows as they delve further into the realm of fate and prophecy. They are capable of influencing their own destiny and bending the course of future events in subtle ways.

Blessed Vision

At 14th level, your connection to the future becomes more potent. When you cast a spell that requires a saving throw, you can choose to roll twice and take the higher result. You can also use this ability with any spell that targets one or more creatures within range.

Additionally, when you roll for initiative, you can choose to roll twice and take the higher result. You can use this feature a number of times equal to your Charisma modifier (minimum of once). You regain all expended uses after finishing a long rest.   In addition at 14th level, the Oraclechild gains the ability to twist or sever the paths of destiny for those around them.

  • Fate Manipulation: You can expend 5 sorcery points to change the outcome of an event, such as causing a creature to fail a saving throw automatically or forcing an attack roll to miss. This feature can be used in combat, or outside it. This change is immediate and can only be used once per long rest.
  • Undo Fate: Once per long rest, you can use your action to rewind time. You can undo the last 6 seconds (1 round) of actions that occurred within 60 feet of you, effectively erasing the outcomes of that round. Any damage dealt, healing received, or conditions imposed during that round are reversed. You cannot use this feature to undo a death, but it can undo any other event.

Oracle of Eternity

At 18th level, the Oraclechild gains the power to glimpse the entire timeline of reality. They gain the following abilities:
  • Eternal Prophecy: Once per long rest, you can gaze upon the entire future. For 1 minute, you can make any number of attacks, saving throws, or ability checks with advantage, and you gain the ability to cast a spell without expending a spell slot, as the future aligns with your desires. However, each time you have used this feature, you suffer from a temporary disadvantage on your next attack roll, saving throw or ability check, as the strain of seeing the future takes a toll on your mind.
  • Unraveling Fate: You can choose to force a creature within 60 feet of you to make a Charisma saving throw (DC = 8 + your Charisma modifier + your proficiency bonus). On a failed save, the creature is disadvantaged on all attack rolls and saving throws for 1 minute. Additionally, the creature cannot benefit from advantage during this time. Once you use this feature, you must finish a long rest before you can use it again.
The following should only be seen as guidelines and tips, not hard truths. Your campaign, your character, and your game are yours to approach as you please!

Lunarchild

This is an Avaleen-specific subclass of Sorcerer that you may use in your campaign that is chaotic by design. The Lunarchild's power doesn't just fluctuate; it warps reality itself. Spells they cast are unpredictable, sometimes causing entirely different effects than intended or affecting targets in strange and bizarre ways. They may heal their allies by accident, or twist the laws of gravity around their foes. They channel moonlight, shadow, and madness to fuel their unpredictable and powerful magic.

Roleplay and Themes

The Lunarchild is a highly unpredictable and thematic subclass that encourages players to embrace the unpredictability and the cycles of the world. The class can easily blend into campaigns that revolve around themes of change, balance, fate, or nature’s cycles. The idea of harnessing the moon’s power to either heal, destroy, or confuse gives this subclass incredible versatility and depth, allowing players to approach combat and problem-solving from unexpected angles.    These sorcerers might find themselves in situations where their power is both a blessing and a curse, and they must navigate the dangers of their own power while also seeking out those who understand or seek the same cosmic forces. They might become central figures in campaigns where the veil between worlds is thin, and the forces of chaos begin bleeding through. Lunarchild sorcerers may seek to understand ancient lunar prophecies, unlock the mysteries of the moon’s influence on magic, or protect the world from dark cosmic forces that threaten to eclipse the sun entirely.

Lunarchilds are also perfect for characters who enjoy chaos-driven magic with massive consequences. They might wreak havoc on the battlefield, warp reality itself, or force allies and enemies to adapt on the fly. It’s a subclass that requires careful balance and creativity, as the player never knows how a spell will manifest, even when they try to control it.

In short, the Lunarchild is all about embracing the moon’s power in its purest form—wild, chaotic, and uncontrollable. Every day is a new experience, and the world itself bends and twists under the Lunarchild's influence.

Oraclechild

Oraclechild is an Avaleen-specific subclass inspired by oracles, prophets, and mystics who can glimpse the future, interpret signs, and manipulate fate itself that you can use in a campaign set in Avaleen. The Oraclechild’s power is based on the ability to influence probability, making them valuable in both combat and exploration. They excel at moments when knowing the outcome of a situation can change the course of events.

Roleplay and Themes

This subclass encourages roleplay around destiny, prophecy, and the impact of fate on the world. Oraclechildren may be viewed as mysterious or revered, but also potentially burdened by the weight of their divine visions.   The Oraclechild Sorcerer thrives in campaigns where fate and prophecy play a role. They may be sought after by kings and leaders for their visions of the future or hunted by those who wish to manipulate fate for their own purposes. Their power allows them to subtly shift the course of events, but the more they manipulate destiny, the more the world can seem at odds with their actions. Their power is not always reliable, and sometimes the choices they make are just as chaotic and unpredictable as the future itself.   An Oraclechild might struggle with the weight of their knowledge, having glimpsed the devastating consequences of the future, or they might embrace the chaos of the unknown, ready to shape the world in whatever way they see fit. The tension between the knowledge of the future and the freedom to act creates a fascinating dynamic, making them a powerful and potentially unpredictable character in any party.
