The Elemental Chaos
The middle layer of existence is the elemental chaos, a vast tempestuous sea of ever-changing terrain and clashing elements, where the elements dissolved into a single mix of colliding energies, with stability only enforced in isolated locations. Entry points into the elemental chaos could be found at the lowest depths of the Astral Sea, though creatures which found their way travelling between the Astral Sea and Elemental Chaos almost always were through accidents or feats of probability, and often caused havoc in the alien landscape.
The elemental chaos was once ruled over by the primordials, beings opposite of gods as demons are to devils. These powerful beings, who laid to rest long ago, fuel the elemental energies of the universe, most powerful in the heart of their planes, the four of which are found surrounding the Ethereal plane. The only native creatures to this plane are elementals, beings of varying power and size, born out of their native element. The primary anchor points of these elemental planes were the planes of Fire, Water, Air and Earth, though para-elemental planes of Magma, Ooze, Ice and Smoke were found on the borders of these four planes.
The Elemental Chaos has existed as long as the Astral Sea, and longer than any life in the universe, since before the Primordial Mother sorted the unrestrained flux of energy and elements into ordered planes. Various other primordial beings emerged from this chaos alongside the Primordial Mother, such as the wicked archfiends who emerged from the fiery depths who now reside in the Abyss, or the elemental Titans or Leviathans.
Not much else is known about the elemental chaos, as the swirling depths of deadly elements is an intensely hostile environment for nearly all mortals, and even immortals and other powerful beings have difficulty in operating in the elemental domain. This is the home of the most frightening and destructive creatures. It is believed that deep beneath the Moonkeeper Pass, portals and creatures from the Elemental Chaos can be found after the crust of the earth was split in two during the Schism.
