Torynn Moonwhisper
Torynn Moonwhisper
Torynn Moonwhisper is a half Morfinwae elf, that has never known his true family. He grew up in an orphanage where he became responsible for the Human twins Alistair, and Lilith. The two became his best friends even though they were younger than he was by several years.
He would spend his days teaching the twins what he could all while doing his chores at the orphanage, and his nights reading to them by candlelight. That is of course until the night of the tragedy that claimed both the lives of twins along with everyone else from the orphanage. Torynn was reading to his friends like he did every night, though on this night he was exhausted from an extra long day of chores to prepare the orphanage for a visit from its proprietor Mr. Fulwail. In his exhaustion he fell asleep with his candle still lit, while he slept onthe floor he stretched and moved the candle was knocked over. The flame of the candle caught on the blanket of his bunk and started to ignite further. As the flames grew higher and hotter, the wood and wattle orphanage never stood a chance.
He awoke to the acrid smell of wood smoke and the imense heat of the flames. As he realized it was much to warm for the dead of winter, he awoke with a start and inhaled a deep lungful of smoke scorching the inside of his lungs. Realizing the danger they were all in, he rose to a crouch and went to the twins bunk. Pulling the blanket from them and shouting them awake he gathered their wheezing, coughing forms into his arms. Swaddling them as best he could with the blanket he had quickly soaked in the washbasin in their room, he tried to get them out to safety.
Over the course of the next several minutes he cautiosly navigated the deadly inferno in attempts to escape with their lives intact. All the while the twins continued coughing and having difficulty breathing. The smoke filled their lungs and scorched them from the indside out. While he tried to get the twins to safety, not showing concern for himself Torynn earned several severe burns across his arms. Those burns would stick with him for the rest of his life, leaving horrible scars from just above his elbows down onto the backs of his hands. As he fought through the blazing inferno with the twins swaddled in his arms, Torynn finally managed to get outside of the orphanage.
That is where his true horror lied. When he breached the flaming husk of the orphange and emerge into the less smoke addled air, he saw to his horror that the twins and himself were the only ones to get to safety. As he looked around he heard the screams of those trapped inside, remembering his friends in his arms he quickly and painfully removed the blanket he used to protect them. With sputtering, coughing gasps they greedily tried to take air into the scorched lungs. Unfortunately as the clerics arrived, they were too late and Lilith and Allistair had sucumed to their injuries and shed their mortal coils. Blaming himself for the fire and the death of so many people is a burden he carries with him to this day. Though the clerics could use their magics to mend his flesh and remove some of the worst of the burn scars, Torynn refuses. He sees it as an act of pennance for being so careless and costing his two best friends their lives.
After making sure that his friends bodies were cared for he left the orphanage and set out into the world. Choosing to make his living as a bard, while living with his scars. Torynn learned that while he had grown to recognize his scars and felt that they were a constant reminder of his past, others found them to be frightening. With that knowledge he took to wearing long gloves that came up past his elbows that he would always wear when he was around others. After a few years of learning his way around a lute and the arts of persuasion and intimidation, his life changed yet again. It started as images caught in his periphreal vision, those glimpses evolved into seeing spirits from across the veil. In the begining it was random amorphous spirits, but as time went on the ambiguity of them drifted away. Terrified out of his mind Torynn realized the spirits whom had been visiting him were those of Alistair and Lilith, his two best friends from childhood that he still blamed himself for their deaths. His immediate thought was that they were seeking to punish him and he tried continually tried to appologize to them, but no matter what he said they refused to let him live in peace. After months of the twins appearing to him, Torynn couldn't take it anymore and considered ending his life.
He made a plan to climb to the top of a building tie a noose around his neck and jump off. When he got to the top of the building and got his noose tied off, Torynn stepped to the edge of the roof and looked down. While he was on the precipice of death he thought about his life and what had gotten him here. As everything in his life from as far back as he could recall flashed through his mind, the image of Lilith in Allistair hugging him and looking up to him. As he thought about his deceased friends its at that moment their spirits appeared in front of him, frightening him and causing him to loose his footing ath the buildings edge. Torynn slipped and tumbled off the roof the noose going taught. Pawing and scrabbling at the noose to free himself, it was at that moment that the spirits of the twins chose to act and caused the railing Torynn had tied the noose to had to crack and he fell to the ground below. Removing the noose from his bruised neck Torynn gasped for air and came to realize that the twins were not there to harm or haunt him, they were there to help him and protect him as he did to them when they were alive.
