Death is not an event in life: we do not live to experience death. If we take eternity to mean not infinite temporal duration but timelessness, then eternal life belongs to those who live in the present.
History
When the first seeds of a nation were planted at Khaldunheim, eternity was not the goal. King Torgrim Korshal forged a fledgling nation during the March of Mortals to combat regional warlords hellbent on subjugating his people, undertaking a fell ritual to gain unnatural abilities. These new powers allowed the king to eliminate threats to his people, at a steep cost—the king seemingly disappeared after the conclusion between him and a bitter rival.
A statewide funeral was held, and a period of mourning was observed for the fallen king after his disappearance. A new monarch was elected to head the young nation, to sit within the Crown of Stones in Khaldunheim. It is written that, on the first evening of the first monarch's day under the crown, the man was as pale as a ghost, his eyes wide and glossy as if he had glimpsed into the void itself—and it looked back. That day sparked a rumor that has held until the Age of Ash, some two millennia later: that the first king still lives, and still rules from the shadows of his bastion.
