Ben Schindler
The president of the Yucca Flat Young Patriots Society, Ben is also an honor student, a talented magician, and a Hebrew tutor at the synagogue. He's a senior in high school, which means he'll be taking his finals in just a few short months, and then will be off to a special unit in the U.S Army.
Defining Features
Tall and effortlessly athletic, Ben is an accomplished marksman and holds one of the records for fastest run time in the school. He has a scar on his cheek that Julia Stasiuk gave him as a child when she accidentally pushed him against a window too hard, which broke the glass and cut his face. Julia feels bad about it years later, even though Ben assures her that she shouldn't.
Ben speaks English, German, Hebrew, and Russian, tutoring Julia in the latter and gently ribbing her about speaking Russian like a Ukrainian. Ben is one of the only people Julia's father will speak to.
Ben is one of the students that faculty has their eyes on, as his talent with magic use (and most other things) make them hopeful that he's accomplished successful enrichment.
Ben is standing there when Dad opens the door. He’s in his school uniform: the same shirt as mine but without piping or a Peter Pan collar, underneath a navy jacket, with navy slacks and a blue-and-red striped tie. His gas mask bag is carried over a shoulder and across his chest so the mask is on the left side, like we were taught. Ben’s dark brown hair has been combed to the side, and his eyes are like the coffee Dad was just drinking, and his cheeks dimple as he smiles wide and says, “Gut Shabbos, Mr. Stasiuk!”
Personality
I focus back on the manual that I took without permission from the library, frowning. What would Ben think if he knew what I was doing with this manual? With my stolen radio hidden under my bed? He’s an Eagle Scout. He’s a magic tutor. He’s the president of the Young Patriots Society. He’s probably never broken a rule in his life.
Ben's physical and academic excellence are punctuated by a kind, open, and funny personality. He's proud of his relationships with his younger siblings and puts his family above all else. His older brother Aaron Schindler left for the military a year ago, and Ben dilligently writes Aaron letters to stay in touch.
Lately, he's starting to be troubled by the letters he gets back.
Ben is very actively Jewish and is for all appearances a very buttoned-up rule follower. Charming and confident, he is surprising in his willingness to challenge rules that he disagrees with or understands to be unfair or outdated.
