City of Luxia

Luxia is one of the great Lysandrian cities of the Barley Sea region, known for its ancient inland lighthouse and its "sky market".

Government

Like the other former Barleyer former city-states now part of the Kingdom of Lysandria, the government of the City of Luxia and that of the County of Luxia are one and the same, ruled directly by a Count and their court.   Currently, Countess Adenna Gilderoy II and her court fill that role.

Defences

Being a fortified settlement, Luxia features a variety of defenses. The outermost is a moat surrounding a stone brick wall with archer positions as well as four parapets equipped with enclosed rotating ballista turrets. If this is breached, defenders can fall back to the Old Luxian Garrison House or the high ground of the Sky-Market.

Infrastructure

More than most others, Luxia is a city famed for its infrastructure. It is a place where goods are exchanged between airship moorings, river boats, and wagon caravans along the Barley Sea, and where enormous quantities of grains are refined by the mills along the riverside.   In addition to its roads, bridges, and the regionally-famous Sky-Market, it also features docks for water vessels down in Rivertown.

Districts

Luxia is informally divided into a few districts, including:
  • The Sky-Market
  • Temple Quarter
  • Temple Quarter
  • Rivertown East
  • Rivertown West

History

According to legend, a wandering monk saw a ball of light traveling along in the distance. Curious, he followed it, until it hung in the sky above a river for some time before disappearing. The monk saw this as a sign of some importance, and built a tower under where he had seen the light. Atop this tower, he built a great pyre to light, which he maintained for many years.   Being far from any ocean, the lighthouse fell into disuse after the monk's death until it became a nesting place for a giant eagle who claimed the tower by the riverside, until warriors were able to drive it away. While it was nesting in that tower, the river could not be crossed safely, and this fact did not go unnoticed.   A garrison was established to protect the tiver crossing from such things in the future, and a town grew around the garrison. Soon, mills were built along the riverside, harnessing the river's power to process the grain flowing down from the Barley Sea.   In time, the lighthouse glowed again with the advent of the airship, and Luxia became a landmark for those who traveled the skies. The town grew into a city, and the city, being an important river crossing and airship depot, was soon fortified, becoming one of the great Barleyer Sovereignties.

Points of interest

Notable points of interest in Luxia include:
  • The Luxian Sky-Market, a large airship mooring platform which unusually features a bazaar and a goods depot elevated high in the sky, which also acts as the city's last line of defense against invaders. The Ancient Monk's Lighthouse still remains a component of the market, and business is conducted at all hours in its light. Dockmaster Ulkki keeps order as best he can.
  •
  • The Old Luxian Garrison House, which still serves its old purposes as well as that of the administrative center for city functions including the offices of the County Marshall and the Thief-taker General. It is also the site of the city lockup.
  •
  • Lightwatch Manor, home of Countess Adenna Gilderoy II and her court.
  •
  • The Dawnflower Museum, dedicated to preserving the artifacts and story of Captain Dawnflower of the airship Butterfly.
