Port Virginia Settlement in Atlantica | World Anvil

Port Virginia

Port Virginia is the furthest port in the northern part of the Great Western Ocean that is able to refit ships.  It is the largest port in the Maple Islands, and as such it attracts local boats from all over to sell their Maple Syrup.  This makes Port Virginia the world's largest exporter of the valuable Maple Syrup.    Since the Port is also the last port capable of fully outfitting a ship, this makes it the largest "jumping off" port for expeditions to Atlantica as well.  While there are some that would argue that The City of Puerto Rico would actually be a better port for this, it is so far away that it makes expedition building here a little harder.   The History of the port is actually quite short.  While it was founded over 150 years ago as a minor fishing village, within the last 50 years it has grown significantly as the maple syrup industry has exploded to the size that it is today.  This means that its infrastructure is still growing.  It struggles to keep up with its growth and as a vulnerable port the crown of Saxony has invested in its defense but is only able to build stone towers with palisade walls before the city grows again, and the defenses need to be redesigned.  The governor's hardest job is actually keeping up with infrastructure and its demands.

"The Maple Islands are a beautiful place, but Port Virginia is an accident waiting to happen!  The buildings are mostly wood with little stone and close together, waiting for a fire.  The sewage runs through the streets which has the clerics working overtime.  The defenses are improving because of the war with Aquitaine but previously they were a haphazard thing.  Sure its an economic opportunity but I think you take your life in your own hands if you were to try to set up shop there.  We need to improve things there before we have a major disaster."   ~ Anonymous Noble Lord in the court of Saxony
