Geir and Gisle

Geir and Gisle are the two servants of Ingrid in the R-rated series, "Valkyrie, Chooser of the Slain".

Unfortunate Beginnings

In their small Norse village, where the sexes have tightly defined separate-but-equal roles to play, young men are a valuable resource to a household. In their society women own and run their households, ruling their daughters until they are old enough to take on households of their own, and housing their menfolk and servants.   Geir and Gisle, never having met, both were among the minority of young men who had no drive to mate with a wife and join a household. Both after a certain age were expelled from their families in the hopes that necessity would force them to join another household or otherwise make their respectable way in the world.   One by one, they were found by Målmann, husband of Ingrid, who quietly feared for his wife's sanity and wanted her to have servant / bodyguards who would have no temptation to violate her wedding vows. Målmann took them in as servants / adopted sons (but mostly servants) and Ingrid accepted them into her household.

Her First Believers

Geir and Gisle, spending much time with Ingrid, had to be medically patched up as their rough-and-tumble styles did not lead them to performing their chores in the safest manner, ever. They found her unique recipes for healing lotions and disinfectants to be truly magical. They had no compunction at all to take a poultice that increased their metabolism allowing them to do the work of two strong men each, even though they had a rough recovery afterward.   When she told them her belief that the missing persons in the town were being eaten by a creature of incredible size and might, they knew for certain that her magical potions could give them the strength to defeat the beast. It is their faith (and combat prowess) that demonstrates to Målmann that his wife is not deluded, she actually has all the power she claims, perhaps even her ship that flies among the stars might be a reality, not the delusion he assumed it was.

A Difficult Life

As Ingrid's quests to fight man-eating beasts take her further and further, and as the beasts become more and more fearsome, her bodyguards take quite a beating. Målmann's troop of soldiers are willing to fight and give their lives if necessary, but Geir and Gisle in particular are always close to Ingrid and the most reckless due to their faith that Ingrid can always patch them up.   Geir loses an arm in the fight against the Yeti. Ingrid attaches one of the slain Yeti's arms onto Geir and applies advanced medicines allowing it to graft, not a perfect replacement by any means, but good enough to serve him as a fighting fist for over a year.   Gisle is swallowed almost whole by the dragon attacking the town of Kinloch and manages to fight his way out again. In the aftermath, Ingrid stretches her capabilities to attach the hind legs of a slain horse to Gisle's leg stumps. To even her surprise, the graft takes without transplant rejection but only with her constant intense manipulation of Gisle's immune system. Gisle never doubts that she can do anything.
